So really, how utterly bereft is Hollywood for original material these days? I mean, most all of the major movies this summer are either adaptations of existing material, remakes, or sequels. But what I'm thinking more of is Tinseltown's recent infatuation with remaking Japanese films. The Ring, The Grudge, One Missed Call... hell, even lighthearted romantic fare like Shall We Dance hasn't been spared the Hollywood hackjob.
Which makes it wholly unsurprising (but still incredibly depressing) that a Western production studio, Vertigo Entertainment (no, not the DC imprint that gave us Watchmen and Sandman, unfortunately), has picked up the rights to remake Death Note. Details on how the franchise will be retooled for the multiplex-going masses who can't even pronounce the word "manga" correctly are still sparse at this time. However, Vlas and Charles Parlapanides, writers for the CW TV series Undercover, are going to be penning the script.
More info can be found at this ANN link. So who wants to make predictions as to how the Western movie will be altered? Post away in the comments, then come back here in a year or two and brag to your friends. "See, I KNEW that Zac Efron would play Light!"
This is just ridiculous, I mean the DN movie was just released over here. Who knows though, it could be win to the millionth power over the original.
