Manga at Walmart? I remember when I first saw some Naruto at Walmart a few years back. I didn't think much of it. It didn't seem like a dedicated move at all. I though it was something they were testing out. But look today and you'll find a lot of manga at a lot of the bigger stores. It's nothing like a proper selection, but it seems that they're trying something.
What is their end goal? Manga is huge. I don't know that Walmart would dedicate the shelf space they'd need to sell any reasonable amount of manga. Are these supposed to be impulse buys? Gateway drugs? Or are they some misguided attempt by the periodicals buyer to try to take a bite out of that manga money that other retailers are making.
Walmart has become something of a book destination. You can count on them having all the best-sellers and popular paperbacks at a lower price than the others. That would be fantastic if they could do that for manga. But are they willing to do that? I have no doubts that the world's largest retailer could do it, but will they?
And what's with the selection in this image? Naruto and Bleach I get. I sometimes see Fruits Basket. But Vampire Knight and Zelda?
What I really want to know is if any of you Japanator readers have actually made it a point to go to Walmart to buy manga? Could you see Walmart as a manga destination?
I hope they expand, considering the closest Barnes & Noble is over 35 minutes away from me, but my Walmart is only less than 10 minutes.
