Maryland banning Manga in the school system

Maryland banning Manga in the school system photo

Do you live in Maryland? Well, I have some bad news. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John Fredericksen announced that the Dragon Ball manga will still be removed from all public school media centers in Wicomico County, Maryland for the new school year. Last year, a nine-year-old fourth grader had borrowed the first volume from the Pittsville Elementary library thus triggering an out roar from the community.  Holloway showed what he described as "sexual" content.  If you are not familiar with the source material, this is the same series where Bulma flashes Roshi, amoung several other people throughout the course of series.  I don't see what's so wrong about a parent not wanting their elementary schoool kid to see that, but then again I can see how this is a bit extreme.

The main issue here is the ban has been promoted to middle and high schools and are not allowed in any independent school district within the entire district. This could just be the beginning of a major ban against all manga material. In other venues recently, manga has just gotten popular enough to be let into select Wal-Mart's but it seems Maryland won't be one of those states.

So what do you think? Fair? Or unfair? I mean it is not like the kid picked up a Negima manga or some other ecchi series...right?
