With the Republican nominee being locked in, the Democratic primaries in a dead heat, and a wave of third party candidates throwing their hats into the ring, it's an exciting time for US politics. What better way to celebrate The President Spirit than with what is, quite possibly, the most patriotic, rah-rah-go-America video game ever made?
Metal Wolf Chaos is a 2004 Japanese XBox game developed by From Software (the team behind Armored Core and Chrome Hounds, amongst many other things). The game takes place in a not-too-distant future where the American government is in a state of upheaval. What happened, you ask? Well, sitting president Michael Wilson has been disposed in a coup-de-etat... by none other than his own Vice-President, Richard Hawke. Hawke's government is hell-bent on destroying the things America holds dear - freedom, prosperity, and quite possibly American Idol - and Richard will stop at nothing (nothing!) to dispose of any resistance. It's up to Michael and his mildly insane press secretary Jody to take back the White House.
And how do they plan to take back the White House, you ask? By using a giant mech suit named Metal Wolf, of course. Of course.
The game sees Michael Wilson fighting in Metal Wolf at plenty of well-known US locations - San Francisco, the Grand Canyon, Chicago, even Miami Beach. Each stage has own own unique goals and objectives, but two things are constant: Metal Wolf will cause unprecendented amounts of property damage, and the villains will be absolutely nucking futs. Alas, despite all the dialogue having been recorded in English and the game being completed in an election year, Metal Wolf Chaos never saw a US release. It really is a loss - not only is the game ridiculously over-the-top patriotic with all kinds of insane(ly hilarious) twists and turns in the plot, but it's an incredibly fun action title, to boot.
Never fear, however, as Something Awful forums poster Genpei Turtle recently did a complete video playthrough of the game, which has been archived here. He has even seen fit to subtitle much of the additional Japanese story text and add voice-over commentary to explain gameplay nuances and other odd and interesting bits. There are even bonus clips showing off some of the alternate Metal Wolf paint schemes, gag weapons, and sidequests. Since many will never get the opportunity to play this title themselves, Genpei's videos are the next best thing to having a JP Xbox and a copy of the game (which is now quite difficult to obtain, even in Japan). If you have a couple hours to kill - and want to see everything this wonderful and sadly overlooked title has to offer - watching this will make you proud to be an American. When you're not laughing your ass off, that is.
