Miku debuts in US with Toyota Corolla commercial

Miku debuts in US with Toyota Corolla commercial photo

Well, that was certainly unexpected. As a fan of Hatsune Miku and everything that entails, I'm conflicted with this new commercial from Toyota. We've known for a while that Miku was going to come over to the US somehow, but I thought it would be in the form of the Project DIVA games or an official release of the software. Instead we see the teal-tressed songstress become a shill for the latest model of Toyota Corolla, and not even a very good looking one.

Now, I'm not one of these people who believes in the concept of "selling out" and keeping obscure things I like obscure. Hell, I take pleasure in showing people the odd and niche things I see. I like it when I can talk about things I enjoy and have people know what I'm talking about. This, on the other hand, may be going a bit far. It makes sense that a Japanese car company like Toyota could have the licensing power and reach to get a character like Miku out there in the mainstream, but why would they try and sell cars with her? Her appeal is limited to nerdy audiences and introducing her like this does nothing to help spread her name.

The only thing I can think that they're doing is trying to appeal to folks like us that already know who she is hoping that we'd be interested in buying a Corolla if we're looking for some wheels. At least for me it doesn't really work on any level, though I appreciate the general sentiment. i also dig their choice of Vocaloid song. What about you guys? Hit the jump, watch the vids and let us know what you think.

That commercial was and is hard to process mentally. Is miku big enough here to justify using her to sell cars?
If these are legit TV spots in America, I am going to die.
I welcome Miku to the United States. I'm okay with this because there's a slight chance we may start getting all the awesome Vocaloid stuff they get in Japan here for a lower price and that's awesome to me as a diehard vocaloid fan. The part I dread is the hot topic and annoying weeaboo crowd jumping on the bandwagon. I'd go on a killing spree if I saw some fat sixteen year old wearing a Black Rock Shooter shirt.

The last thing I want is to share a common interest with the type of idiots who call each other "poser",treat pocky like it's the skin of Christ and cite Slipknot as good music.
I think it was a stupid idea, I have a friend who is the biggest Miku fan and he probably would trade in his Nissan for a Corolla if it wasn't just a plain jain Corolla. Hell even I'm in the market for a new daily driver and have owned Toyota's in the past but it's still just a Corolla.

What they should have done has made a limited edition Miku Corolla with say some different badges, maybe a little more performance, and at the very least a new trim level with additional options to set it apart from the other Corolla's you can buy. I'm not talking about adding Miku stickers all over the car, but different higher quality panels, seats, and what not make it appeal to the younger crowd that want a cooler looking Corolla than what their Mom would buy.

Seriously I don't even think the Japanese are stupid enough to buy this car even though it gets Miku's seal if approval.
Well, they should probably explain what Miku is more. Out of context it's pretty random. Though I guess they're just marketing to the internet crowd?

But hey, cool to see Miku branching out i guess XD

:S Though it's going to awkward to see if it's on TV.
This is kinda cool I guess but I agree it's strange they would try to appeal to such a niche market. The only thing I could think of was some concert video making the viral internet rounds not too long ago with titles like "3D HOLOGRAM SINGER FROM JAPAN!!", I remember some of my non-Japan loving friends sending me clips like WHOA THOSE JAPANESE ARE CRAZY!!.... but yeah, that would hardly be something to base a marketing campaign on.

I also agree if you're going to market it with Miku, give us SOMETHING Miku related. Maybe a GPS with Miku's voice? I'd buy that.
I think it's a neat way to try and pump up the car industry and make a serious attempt at a new demographic...but there's just something off here. It's a little too niche-oriented. Most people in Japan wouldn't buy this...
Bad Apple round 2.
The second one is better. They both look like works in progress, though.
I dont trust toyota but wow miku changes my mind quick!
I'm VERY shocked that Toyota did this, like jaw to the floor shocked. Its kinda cool that they attempted this but you can't help but question it. I hope this inspires Sega to bring over Project Diva, in fact I thought that box in the car was project diva.

Also a little embarrassed because a some of my friends are aware that I like Miku Hatsune stuff and there's a chance they'll see this crap.
*35 seconds in 1st video* GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, that high-pitch noise.

For the commercial themselves, they're okay, but it would seem pretty random for someone who wasn't aware.

Maybe it's just me, but it just seems weird seeing her in an US commercial.
I like that Toyota is trying new things and it's nice to see Miku. Honestly though I'm not sure who this add is aimed at, I mean regular people are gonna be like okay cg teal haired anime chick with a Japanese computer voice. Why should we care? and the big dreams little dreams thing is just lame.

But at least they are trying so I guess they get some points for that.
Don't mind a Miku-themed advertising campaign, but the first commercial came off as pretty awkward. The announcer's voice, the "big dreams" content, the screeching "AHH"...

Just alot of "Huh?"
Sooo...why did they screw with her face?
My friends, the day has come. The day when Hatsune Miku invades mainstream America!
Soooooo, apparently I'm all of a sudden interested in Toyota Corollas?

Even wrote a parody:
ぽっぴぽっぴぽっぽっぴっ・・・
ぴい―――!
さあ駆れ お前好きだろ?
トヨタ コロラ
私が決めた
いま決めた
だから駆れで 私の
トヨタ コロラ
価格は1260000円!

(Translated:) Po-pi-po-pi-po-po-pi-po- x11 Piiiiii-------
Now drive, you like it right?
To~yo~ta Co~ro~lla
I've come to the conclusion and decided that.
So you, please drive my
To~yo~ta Co~ro~lla
Only costs 1,260,000 yen!

The commercial itself seems to be fine in all regards to me. The solitary thing I'd change is remove that ear-splitting shriek (heck, why use "World is Mine" anyways? Wouldn't Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru be more fitting?). Aside from that, I think it's a pretty good typical car endorsement commercial.

Now, as for the campaign as a whole, I can't help but ask, "What the hell?!". Not in the bad sense but in the this-came-out-of-nowhere sense. I don't dislike it, but I really do wish they'd include some sort of options that are actually related to her for the car packages. I mean, even something simple, like an option to include some of her singles preloaded into the MS Sync in the car perhaps? Otherwise the promotion site comes across as a giant tease.
The only thing off about this commercial is that the Miku appears to be shoehorned in. The car isn't even adorned with any unflattering pictures of her. You would think someone as popular as her would make her big American debut a little flashier.
I'm not sure how Miku connects to Toyota, but I need to see this commercial air.
I think the announcers voice is more awkward than anything else in the video.
@CyrusTheBlue "I'd go on a killing spree if I saw some fat sixteen year old wearing a Black Rock Shooter shirt. "

Jesus, good thing I don't own a BRS shirt. I think I may have saved some lives.
I must be really shallow coz all of a sudden I want that Corolla.

Good song choice and good as, As long as her name is out there these guys are doing their job.
There's nothing really wrong with the car, but the commercial is kind of obnoxious and doesnt really fit in my opinion. Also, if it weren't for Japanator I'd have no clue who that was in the first place, so seeing that on tv would have just raised an eyebrow and then I'd change the channel every time I saw it after that.

what the...
That shrill voice is sure to popular with car buyers.
wtf is up with that dude looking Miku??
Er... that's going to confuse a lot of people.
Total Win for us otaku. But I think Middle America is about to demand another recall. And NOT for the car.
so you mean this is an ad they're going to play on tv and stuff?

wow, this is surreal to say the least, too bad I already have a car
isnt it nice that toyota is recovering from the media after what happens on the prius scandal. i like the concept of this corolla's car part and accessory style that makes this car more interesting for car fanatics.
