Millenium Actress to make its theatrical debut

Millenium Actress to make its theatrical debut photo

Now, isn't this an interesting one? Satoshi Kon's film Millennium Actress is bound for the stage in Japan.

The theatre company Take It Easy will be putting on the performance at the end of the month, starting in Osaka, and then moving to Tokyo and running a set of shows at the end of February, followed by a few shows in April at Fukuoka.

Thinking about the film, it's entirely possible to move it to the stage -- a place where it might in fact do rather well. The story stays firmly planted in the past, and it's entirely plausible for the director to move into that timeframe as well -- returning to the present would be a good way to switch acts. Honestly, I'm really bummed I'm missing out on something like this.

If you're lucky enough to be in any of these regions at the allotted times, be sure to check out a production -- tickets only cost about 4,000 yen. Even if you don't fully understand Japanese, if you've seen the movie, you might be able to fumble your way through.

I really wish I could go see this, it sounds like it'll be a blast. Would be fun to watch how they transition between present and past on the stage.

I also half expected it to be a Takarazuka Revue production for some reason. That would have been interesting.
I love the way Satoshi Kon interweaves past and present, reality and fiction in this movie. It might be hard to pull it off on stage, but if they do this is such a must see :)
Could be good, Millennium Actress is my favourite Kon film. It fit the animated medium quite perfectly though. It relied on pretty pictures to tell the story as much as the dialogue, so I think they're going to have to get a little creative with the script for this play.

Too bad Kon will never know about this. Judging from his farewell note, he seemed a bit bummed his movies never reached a mainstream audience, and even believed the intellecutal properties he left his family were of little value - he would've appreciated the recognition methinks.

Curry Refills at Coco Ichibanya in Japan

After reading a recent article about getting free refills of curry sauce, I had my doubts. I completely trusted in the news, do not get me wrong, but it seemed too good to be true. There had to be some catch. I mean, seriously, we are talking about getting free curry sauce here. Join me as head into my local Coco Ichibanya in rural Japan and try to ask for a second helping of their fine sauce.
