More details for Akira film: Robert Pattinson looked into photo

More info about the live-action Akira adaption was released recently, and no one still has anything solid to go off of to say whether it'll be good or bad. Some of the new tidbits released, however, give some insight on what's going on with the project, and what might be coming down the line.

First off, if all goes according to the director's (the Hughes Bros.) way, then we can expect the film released in two separate installments, a la Kill Bill. A list of actors being contacted for the two lead roles of Kaneda and Tetsuo was also released, and surprisingly some of the names on that list are rather big.

Justin Timberlake, Joaquin Phoenix, and Chris Pine are rumored to be up for the role of Kaneda while actors like Andrew Garfield, James McAvoy, and Robert Pattinson are heard as those suitable for the role of Tetsuo. I'll admit, it'd be interesting to see Timberlake play a teenage thug biker and Pattinson to yet again play a large pile of flesh with no emotion.

Kidding, of course...although given that Pattinson has proved he has alright acting chops in films like Remember Me, no one should take his potential involvement as the end-all-be-all of this film. That aside, I figured that this adaption would be looking for some well-known people that Western audiences would recognize, given that the localization of this film will surely be strong. And even though some other manga adaption's never did so well in the past, what would you guys like to see in this release. Would you like to take some more liberties with the New Manhattan setting, or would you just like to take this out behind the shed and into the back woods?

MOAR Rumors:

Legacy Comments

At this point, I don't even want to see this movie ever materialize. It's bad enough that they've localized the story for "Western audiences" (aka. dumbasses), but I just don't like what I've heard, including rumors of a mandatory PG-13 rating. I'm not even a violence-monger, but to see an Akira adaptation that had to compromise just wouldn't be the same.
WHY CAN'T THEY JUST HIRE ASIAN-AMERICAN ACTORS?
I think it should be taken out-back behind the chemical shed and shot.
I'm dying from the inside...
@Paustinj; yes, I agree. I don't know whether there's a shortage of asi-amer actors available/willing/W/E, but it would be nice to see asians play asian parts, this coming from someone who is not Asian.. but hey, what do I know about film?

...(Justin Timberlake??)
@Paustinj
With the new setting of New York as opposed to Tokyo, we're more than likely to be shown the typical ethnicities in the area as opposed to trying and keeping it as similar to the manga as possible. Even the likelihood of Kaneda and Tetsuo keeping their original names seem unlikely.

Also, notice how the actors supposedly involved aren't teenage hoodlums...they're 20-to-30-something mature actors. Hmmm...
Hollywood hates my childhood
Honestly, although I really dislike the major localization, I'm going to give this movie a chance. I can defiantly say that I'm excited to see it. And I will, assuming it gets made. I feel like it would be a good movie as long as they stayed with the original plot. What I really want to know is, what are they doing about all the Japanese names? Are they going to be localized to? It will be kinda hard to explain why people with names like Kaneda, Tetsuo, and Akira are popping up in a place called New Manhattan. (Is it New Manhattan? I can't remember)
@Gee-Man: PG-13 Akira? How does that even work?
I have to agree with gee-man. This can only end in tears for fans.
Prove me wrong - has there ever been a successful live-action movie, both critically acclaimed and commercially successful?
The scriptwriters need to seriously consider the fact that this will ruin them, this will bomb and go straight to DVD and this will sully the name of one of the greatest manga/anime of all time.
When will Hollywood go back to taking a chance on exciting new scripts from maverick directors?
I REEEALLY REAAALLY hope the release date will be set for some time after December 23, 2012
First off: These spam accounts need to be killed.

Secondly, I'm not interested in this film at all. I love Akira the way it is and if I really don't see Hollywood doing it justice with the changes in question.

It takes place in Tokyo... Not the West. That's the first mistake.
I wouldn't bet on Akira being a classic thats for sure, but ill wait till it's out before passing judgement - and yes the spam on here is a real mood killer, anything been done about it?
Hollywood's "Akira" is already going to piss off a lot of people and I'm not even going to get into the localization issues.

The only way I can see "Akira" working with American actors is if it done in the spirit of Sucker Punch. Sell everyone with visuals and just hope that a decent enough cast can make the characters work.
@giovedi

I doubt we should hold Sucker Punch as a model for selling people a movie...
I was writting my comment saying I didn't know to who Hollywood was targeting this movie, but now I know. The target is the general audience, people who don't know the original Akira, so they don't care about actors not being asians nor the story doesn't being in Tokyo. They don't care about the original Akira, so does not Hollywood. Hollywood just want to make a big 3D action movie to earn money, they didn't have an original script, so they got a random foreign movie to copy, put some 3D effects and sell.

So, yeah, Hollywood's "Akira" has nothing to do with the original. Just ignore this pile of garbage and watch the original, and your childhood is preserved.
^sorta like Speed Racer.. which sukked.
