Really bad pun is intended.

Seems like everyone and their uncle is writing one of these this year and some of them where amazingly comprehensive and well written. Originally I didn't plan to make something comprehensive but I just kept on writing and well.. you can see the result for yourself. Really the only thing different I have to add is my own preferences and perspective but well here it is.

I pretty much break all the enjoyable anime I watch into one of 3 categories. For sake of this blog I will give them names. Also to try and save on TLDR I am going to jump right into the meat of things afterwords with a count down list of my favorites for the year. For reference the list will only contain anime that either started in or ended in 2010. Of note I am disqualifying Bakemonogatari and will give it credit as my number one for 09 and leave it at that.

Shining Gems
Anime that really stick out in my mind. These are the anime I am tempted to talk about around people who have no clue what it is I am going on about. The anime that I think goes above and beyond the expectations I have for a genre exceeding them thoroughly enough that I can't help but talk about them and share my love for them with someone else... even if that someone else happens to be one of my very confused siblings who are simply amused at my own amusement.

Polished Gems
Anime that plays by rules and plays them out in a fashion that still manages to be fresh and enjoyably despite minor flaws. The type of flaws that are usually invisible to someone new to the genre or work. Anime that shines within its own genre but does not surpass it.

Unpolished Gems
Anime that I would only recommend to an existing fan of the genre or work. The kind where generally something is off about it. Still a good anime that I enjoyed but one that was not even close to perfect usually lacking pretty strongly in one way or another but still managed to contain something of value that set it apart and above mediocre or bad. This type of anime often knows its target audience and is aimed squarely at them. Usually a low budget or a tendency to try and please everyone watching hold these shows back.

Honorable Mentions
Stuff that for the most part I dropped generally due to a lack of time. Sometimes dropped just because of a general lack of interest in the genre. In a few cases I never picked them up at all but believe them to be of value and so will list them here. Also in a few cases anime that I am currently watching and don't have time to finish before writing this blog.

Honorable Mentions

Giant Killing (watched 1 - 6)

The classic tale of rebuilding a sports team only this time from the perspective of the manager. I will be honest sports are not really my cup of tea and so this series had an unfavorable uphill battle for my attention span from the start. My impression of this series is that it was an interesting take on the underdog sports team becomes a championship winning team. I only watched the first few episodes but I would say this show is worth checking out to anyone who is a fan of sports anime.

Good: Awesome OP, Interesting new perspective on a tried and true formula.

Bad: Predictable, (Can't someone make a sports anime about soul crushing defeat? Why do they always have to win in the end... Its worse then shonen and defeats the point of telling a story about sports. That is my opinion anyway.)

Ugly: I hope you don't mind abnormally huge noses because your getting a good dose of them with this series. Otherwise solid production values for the portion I watched.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! (watched 1 - 4)

A story that follows the activities of the female president of the student council in a school dominated by boys. She hates boys because her father was useless and has no problem showing it off. She also has a secret... she works for a maid cafe to help support her family. Of course this secret is quickly discovered by a fellow classmate who happens to be better at everything than she is. Queue the romantic music and opportunities for development. I thought this anime looked stale at first glace but following some of the other blogger on this site has lead me to believe otherwise.

Good: Strong female lead (although not as strong as the male lead) Much better then I have likely made it sound.

Bad: Been here before nothing new to see.(at least for the first few episodes) No hook I felt like this series was very forgettable and honestly had a hard time remembering enough about it to write this up.

Ugly: Pretty visuals but also could be easily mistaken for any other shoujo.

Shiki (watched 1 - 11)

A soul crushing vampire tale. The kind that scares you senseless and makes you afraid to turn off the lights! Or at least that is what it should have been and sometimes is. This show has some great scare moments and the mystery is interesting, and aside from the deaths of villagers which are all spoiled in the OP generally hard to predict. I dropped this mostly due to having too much on my plate I honestly expect all the build up in the first 11 episodes will make the remaining episodes worth watching. I do have a hard time recommending any but the most hardcore mystery buffs or horror/thriller fans give this a shot however as the pacing is dreadfully slow.

Good: Artistically creative when you see a screen cap from this show you know what it is. Creepy in a good way.. the way that reminds you of days when you where 5 and used to have your parents check under your bed for evil barbie dolls and the like.

Bad: Monologues that can put a documentary to shame. Slow and uneven pacing.

Ugly: Masao Murasako this guys character design is scarier than some of the vampires. Otherwise little to report I liked the art direction in this show.

"Tsukimi, when you get married I'll make a dress just like this, okay?"

Kuragehime (episode 1)

Only watched the first episode had too much on my plate when this aired. Intend to dedicate some time to finding out more about this series at some point in 2011.

Good: Awesome OP best of the year with no competition in my opinion.

Bad: Feels like a been there done that series. (sometimes its hard to judge an anime by its first episode.)

Ugly: Suffers from art that could be taken from any other shoujo series. (with an exception of the supporting cast some of these characters look great and really help the series feel original)

Shinryaku! Ika Musume (watched 1 - 4)

A squid masume comes from the see to invade! is too stupid winds up working for a sea side bar instead. Occasionally funny often stupid and always cute. Any other season I would have watched this show. Ran short on time and this was the first thing I dropped.

Good: Cute

Bad: Idiot savant moe in abundance (good if you like that sort of thing)

Ugly: Productions values are solid for what they are. Nothing much to pick apart here.

Yosuga no Sora (watched 1 - 6)

I can hear Aquagaze raging already at the inclusion of this. But before anyone explodes let me explain.. I personally don't think the anime (as much of it as I have watched) was all that special but it was historic in being an eroge adaption that is completely unashamed of its origins. The H scenes ? yeah those all appear to be included and you won't be needing the BD to see the full scenes either.

Good: It's refreshing to see the original story is intact and uncensored.

Bad: Boring story, Feels like a sad girl in snow without a drama good enough to really make me care. (Although I've been told its much better by the end.)

Ugly: Omfg.. did he really kiss his sister when he was 12?...(good if your into that sort of thing I suppose)

Char!

Super Robot Taisen OG: The Inspector (watched 1 - 5)

Some gundams are at war with mecha from other series. Stuff blows up looks cool makes no sense.. This series is aimed directly at fans of both hardcore mecha and the SRW world its based upon. As an outsider to SRW I was not able to make sense of this series and I feel like I missed out because of it.

Good: Pretty explosions and pretty mechs. Ever wonder what it would be like if char showed up on the 6 of the of the gurren laggen flag ship to take it out only to be stopped by Kamina who was working for some dude that had technology stolen from him by characters from Escaflowne who was supporting the FMP submarine that they where chasing in the first place? Yeah this series is like that.

Bad: Makes no sense to an outsider of the series.

Ugly: Mecha with massive breasts(save that stuff for the human cast!)

Kissing behind the knee

Amagami SS (watched 1 - 4)

Romance series that I initially blew off because I disliked the cast. The story is based off a VN and resets after each arc is completed something I did not know when I dropped it. First arc has an incredibly pathetic male falling for a bitchy princess type who likens him to a puppy. I keep hearing good thing about the latter arcs in the series. Of all the things I dropped in 2010 this is the most likely to get a second chance.

Good: Pretty visuals

Bad: Our leading character is cool with being a girls puppy dog

Ugly: Bitchy princess type dominates first arc

"Your stupidity is what's keeping them away!"

Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru (watched 1 - 4)

An odd story about maids in a maid cafe. It's Shaft and that should be enough to tell you its a bit different from the average maid show. The show seems to lean a bit toward idiot savant moe but the leading girl is really just dense and useless at math. Much of my enjoyment for this series comes from the torment inflicted on the overly serious math teacher. I never really considered this show dropped it just kind of got away from me.

Good: Shaft is behind this and it has an original feel to it. Jokes feel fresh and funny the comedy is the selling point here. Another awesome OP

Bad: Shaft humor you either love it or hate it.

Ugly: There is a small rodent of some form that shows up between scenes. It is easily mistaken for the pedobear if you are not paying attention.

"Back then, it felt like Kou was talking to dad."

Tamayura (watched 1 - 2)

A cute OVA anime about a girl who likes photography. Main character is voiced by Ayana Taketatsu (K-On!'s Azusa) Cute girls do cute things in incredibly cute ways. Full of moments that make you say awww. I fully intend to watch the rest of it when I have the opportunity.

Good: Cute aww inducing anime. Short no reason not to watch this if you like cute things!

Bad: Short if you want a longer slice of life you will have to look elsewhere. I recommend Aria.

Ugly: Nothing from the series itself comes to mind... I did however run across some fan created "artwork" from the series I desperately wish to scrub from my mind.

Unpolished Gems

"Onii Chan!"

28. Inuyasha: The Final Act

It ends.. no really it does. As a show that went on a 6? year hiatus before coming back to air its final episodes I felt that this show had enough going for it to warrant watching a few episodes. I was impressed by what I saw and watched the entire thing. The shikon jewel is still broken although Naraku has collected most of it Inuyasha and crew battle to finish this story off once and for all!

Good: Fast pace(but not rushed) no more stalling here the manga has been finished and this anime shows its determination to put an end one of the most tenacious series that anime has seen created.

Bad: Inuyasha is still the main character is still told to "sit" and still falls into all the other tropes the series is famous(infamous?) for.

Ugly: This show has a very retro feeling to it. It is clean and modernized for the most part and this is really not something I would personally hold against it but I could why someone else would.

"Nia, power output, maximum!"

27. Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls

Girls are super charged by kissing male lead. They use this to battle a great evil that has been cast over Japan and manage to spill ink all over the screen while they are at it. I remember a conversation with a friend that went something like this...

Nameless friend: Dude! the BD release for this series is awesome its all uncensored and shit!

Lifesong: Whats the point of that? Ink spills are what made this series awesome well that and Rie Kugimiya voicing a flat chested tsundere.

Nameless friend: You do realize you are probably the only one enjoying this series that feels that way?

Lifesong: Yeah... I do.

Good: Rie Kugimiya voicing a flat chested tsundere. An example of censorship that adds instead of taking away. Also... Rie Kugimiya voicing a flat chested tsundere.

Bad: Fanservice and sexual innuendo up the ass sometimes its funny (often times its not). Not for children, prudes, or those you wish to make a good impression on that much is clear.

Ugly: They removed the censorship from the BD release! ...er wait most people watching this wanted that...

"It was all girls with glasses..."

26. Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai

Also know as "Oreimo" or "My little sister can't be this cute" The story here is one where an average guy puts up with the whims of his eroge loving sister. The twist is that his sister loves little sister incestuous eroge. I initially found the premise stupid but the execution is solid and the character dynamics often feel quite real. I can say with authority that Kirino is the first anime character who reminds me of a real little sister and that alone helps the premise along a good deal.

Good: Hilarious take on otaku lifestyle. A little sister who actually acts like a little sister.

Bad: Filled with in jokes not the type of show you would want to show to someone on the less accepting side of otaku fandom.

Ugly: Kirino can be a serious bitch.

"Tauburn!"

25. Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto

A galactic pretty boy comes to an island full of time stopping mechs to smash them all save the day and get the girl! Or well that is how the formula has played out so far.

Good: Gorgeous animation! and stellar production values overall. This show is fabulous!

Bad: A bit repetitive and guilty of being a monster(mecha in this case) of the week deal. Main cast is often uninteresting. Even Code Geass was not THIS fabulous.

Ugly: Bring back the Northern Maiden, her story about Sam, and her song! they where the best part of this anime! But no in all seriousness there is nothing ugly about this show aside from its reuse of otherwise gorgeous animation.

Touma's right hand still trumps just about anything imaginable.

24. To Aru Majutsu no Index II

This series is a serious mess it has plot holes the size of the moon and suffers from pacing issues that make Naruto look good. (okay so that statement is a bit exaggerated) Index still manages to be a real fun series despite its flaws and psychopathic characters(or perhaps because of them?) I always look forward to the next episode and I don't expect this will change any time soon. Also index (the character) is completely worthless. I am waiting for the moment the story will kill her off and make something useful of her death. (for all those who will flame me for this it won't ever happen so you can just ignore the previous comment if you like.)

Good: Sometimes a good non discriminate punch to face solves everything. This series is the best example of this I have ever seen.

Bad: Did I mention the gaping holes in what this series calls a plot? Also suffers from pacing issues.

Ugly: Production values are okay acceptable for the medium and from time to time something visually exciting will happen but its not every fight nor even every arc.

"Buriima Buriima Buririnpo Let me become a beautiful girl!".

23. MM!

A romantic comedy aimed squarely at anime Otaku. This series is one that surprised me this past year both by having moments that where incredibly funny and some that where endearing. Comedy is clearly the focus for this show as we see parodies of everything from DBZ to Kampfer in this show. Also one of my favorite ED for the year.

Good: The parodies of other shows are genuinely hilarious I will never look at the never gives up protagonist type the same way again. Bits with Arashiko are touching and feel much more real then you would expect from a series like this.

Bad: The S/M Joke gets run into the ground and are often unfunny. Unresolved open ending.

Ugly: Not really a complaint but the patterns on the skirts don't move in the ED.

"Heroman... Atack!".

22. Heroman

The classic kid becomes super hero tale in a very American style. BONES did a good job with this one. It does start slow but picks up and finishes strong by the end.

Good: Awesome animation bones is behind this one and it shows. Also Stan Lee

Bad: Slow Start and a boring first arc.

Ugly: Nothing to report here, BONES is behind this project and it shows.

"I was wondering what Death Devil was going to be like. They're actually cute.".

21. K-On!!

Girls play guitars and do cute things. Kyoto Animation was behind this one giving it the momentum to become a monster and like it or not become a monster it did.

Good: Good lighthearted music, Cute characters doing cute things(you either like this or you don't I do and so its on the good list) Sawako

Bad: Cute characters doing cute things ALOT! also Idiot savant moe.

Sometimes the zombies are not your biggest concern.

20. Highschool of the Dead

Zombies, Girls, and Guns. Another show aimed squarely at a specific audience. Personally I really liked this story and the little bit of character interaction and development that was worked in between everything else that was going on. It was what made it stand apart from your classic zombie flick.

Good: Breasts + Bullet time, Ridiculous and completely over the top guns girls animation and zombies! Also awesome OP

Bad: Ridiculous and completely over the top guns girls animation and zombies!(wait what?)

Ugly: Shizuka her chest and everything that is good and holy.

"Are you really an Archer-class Servant?"

19. Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works

The retelling of Fate/Stay Nights second arc. This movie is of little value to someone who has not read the VN. That said if you have read the VN its an enjoyable movie despite feeling a bit rushed and leaving a few things out of the animation that should have been there.

Good: UBW in animated form. This is an awesome thing in and of itself as the UBW story is awesome. Well animated fight scenes really steal the spotlight in this movie.

Bad: Cuts out some important dialog that could leave "outsiders" confused as to what is going on and unimpressed.

Ugly: Short and rushed otherwise a good movie with pretty visuals.

Mahiru is too strong for her own good.

18. Working!!

Boy decides to work at family restaurant because cute little girl(who is actually older then him) asks him to. All sorts of quirky characters are introduced. A fun slice of life show with a good amount of comedy and a cute romance that can be interrupted the wrong way.(see MM!)

Good: Funny and Cute

Bad: Slow pacing and the relationships and personality's don't evolve much. Very much following the slice of life formula.

Ugly: Be cautious showing this to anyone who is overly feminist they may take Mahiru the wrong way.

If you are expecting this series to be lighthearted all the way through you are in for a surprise.

17. So-Ra-No-Wo-To

One of the better offerings in slice of life drama that this year had to offer. A story set in a post apocalyptic future where the military setting and beautiful backgrounds and music steal the spot light from the characters.

Good: Cute girls do military things, Insightful take on a post apocalyptic future, Beautiful art direction and music. Catchy OP / ED

Bad: Episode 8? I think it was. If you have not watched the anime as of yet skip this episode completely.

Ugly: Episode 8... unless you have a fetish for watching an overly diligent girl stay in one position for so long she pees herself. If this is the case I advise you to watch this episode and keep it to yourself.(you freak)

Catian cultural anthropologists believe that a cultural level isn't revealed by what a certain party thinks is good, but by what people think isn't good and wouldn't show others.

16. Asobi ni Iku yo!

Also known as "I've come to play!" One of the better fan service riddled shows of the year and my personal favorite among this past summers pickings. Basically the cat people from some other far away world have decided to visit Japan. Elis is out scouting and meets Kio and his family and winds up acting as a primary diplomat between the two groups. All sorts of hilarity ensues as we meet people who vary from violently refusing to acknowledge that first contact has been made with cat girls to people who worship cats as greater beings.

Good: Full of hilarious Sci Fi references, Loaded with Humorous fan service. Elis is an endearing character who comes across as having a genuinely kind and thoughtful personality despite her massive "assets" which might act to suggest otherwise.

Bad: Male lead Kio looks like a grade schooler. This show is a harem and so falls into many of the tropes that harems are famous for.

Ugly: Particularly boring ED

"Hes trading punches with the dragon!"

15. Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou

Hilarious fan service at its best mixed with some hotblooded manliness! This show is seriously underrated. Basically the male lead wants to be a high priest and change the world for the better. Turns out hes destined to be the demon king and destroy the system.

Good: Hot blooded manliness, Incredibly funny fan service.

Bad: Second half is rushed, The ending hurt this one. If not for the second half of the anime (which I still enjoyed) I would have rated this much higher then I have.

Ugly: A good deal of censorship here. if you shy away from nudity I suggest you watch the censored version. If you hate all things censorship related (like most of this shows targeted demographic) the BD or DVD version is a must.

Polished Gems

"That's it! Kick me some more!"

14. Ookami-san

Fables and fairy tales are told by modernizing them and filling them with Otaku in jokes. As well as working a sweet romance into the mix to top things off. This show was certainly not for everyone but I think the superior voice cast and the little twists brought on by the inclusion of fairy tale elements really set this anime above the rest this year.

Good: Interesting use of fairy tales and fables. Awesome voice cast. Not afraid of the Taboo.

Bad: Felt a little rushed most important things are resolved but elements are left open.

Ugly: School setting feels a bit uninspired as if to say "we are playing it safe".

"This is more "playing house" than love"

13. Arakawa Under the Bridge

One of the funniest anime of the year. Crazy people live under a bridge. Rich kid joins them and hilarity ensues. What really sets this show apart and makes it shine are the life lessons that are worked into many of the stories told. Cho Stella did nearly put this show here on her own however.

Good: Hilarious and much deeper than what you see at face value.

Bad: Sometimes abstract to the point of being absurd.

Ugly: Not much to say here Shaft left me impressed with this one.

"It's a good sign if they at least offer us tea."

12. Bakuman

A mans romance! Dreams of hitting it big with manga is the basic premise of this show. At first it struck me as a slice of life with no real direction but has quickly turned that around and shown me that it is indeed a story driven drama just a slow paced one. On paper this anime really does not sound all that exciting its the little details and mind games(the author did write Death Note after all) that make this what it is.

Good: Awesome story telling makes an average premise into something special.

Bad: Pacing issues as I mentioned above. I initially mistook it as a slice of show with no real direction.

Ugly: Good god what did that woman do with her hair.

"Stop it Shana!"

11. Shakugan no Shana S

The continuation of the Shana saga, This OVA series was set to embellish on the relationships between the characters in setup for what I have been led to believe will be a season 3 of the series.

Good: With the exception of the first two episodes tells an original story set in the world of Shana before she met Yuugi. Its short and I can't really say much without spoiling it but if you liked Shana in the least you owe it to yourself to give this a watch.

Bad: Short and as it is primarily a prequel it does not answer any of the questions brought on by the second season.

Ugly: The villain is a blob... watch and you will understand.

"I will let this one speak for itself."

10. Break Blade (1 - 2)

I watched these movie only a few nights ago more or less at random. I am incredibly surprised no one was talking about these as they are very good. Set in a world where humans have the genetic ability to manipulate quarts. Quarts are used as a resource for nearly everything imaginable from powering vehicles to firing weapons to acting as armor on mecha suits. Yes that's right this series is a mecha with a rich political setting and a beautify designed world. Not to mention awesome mech design as well. Mecha fans where you guys? I am glad I did not miss this as it was easily a highlight of the year and I eagerly await the rest of the movies. (I was considering moving this higher up on the list then I did and may do just that should I make a list next year.)

Good: Interesting political setting, Unique use of magic and science. Philosophy on war and violence. Beautiful animation and action sequences.

Bad: Falls into a few mecha tropes but that is the worst of it.

Ugly: Does not compute this anime is gorgeous. I can't help but wonder.. am I the only one here who has seen this?

"Come, Divine One! Join us in the game world!"

9. Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai

Also know as "The World God Only Knows" Otaku humor at its best. Basically the god of conquest in the eroge world is forced to use his ability on "real" girls.

Good: Insightful and funny often parodying things that only otaku and gamers would understand but this is the shows strong point. Kemia's singing in the final ED is Glorio!

Bad: Not what many people where expecting it to be. Personally not a bad point for me as I love what it is.

Ugly: Elsee's dishes tentacles > dragons.

"Stop!"

8. Otome Youkai Zakuro

Half spirit girls work with the military to deal with issues relating to spirits. Or at least that is where this tale starts. This anime did nothing special and for me to write about it without first showing it to someone is a discredit to the series. When I say it did nothing special I mean to say that the the show is incredibly fresh without doing anything in particular to accomplish it.

Good: Sweet endearing and charming are the verbs I would use to describe this series.

Bad: Never raises above its potential almost feels like its playing it safe so to speak although there is nothing in particular I can point to for the sake of expressing this.

Ugly: Nothing here another gorgeous work.

"The price has certainly been paid."

7. xxxHOLiC Rou

The OVA continuation of xxxHolic. Only a single episode so I will say nothing as to avoid spoilers.

Good: Full of awesome for fans of the series.

Bad: Pretty meaningless addition to this list for anyone wondering what xxxHolic is.

Ugly: In short no its not.

Shining Gems

Brains Base sure knows how to get my attention.

6. Durarara!!

Here we are now on to the real highlights of this year! Durarara! Had everything I want in an anime.. Quite literally as even Holo manages to make an appearance. Not quite Bacanno! but I can't really hold that against it. This show was brilliant from start to finish. I hope we will see a sequel.

Good: Awesome characters animation plot and storytelling.

Bad: Has some slow points and can be wordy. Main trio spend a good deal of time being incredibly boring in comparison to the rest of the cast.

Ugly: Well there was this one poor soul who got punched out of his clothing by a man who hates fighting..

Starlight Breaker!

5. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st

Magical girl anime done right. For the first time I have to say that this movie completely obfuscates the original series. Being on the wrong side of a Starlight breaker has never before looked so amazing.(or painful for that matter.) The story is not to be underestimated either.

Good: Gorgeous animation obviously a high budget work. Embellishes on the things that made the original a classic while cutting those that didn't fit.

Bad: Naked little girls. My personal thoughts on the matter are that I am not a pedophile or lolicon so why should I really care.. that said I don't really talk about this anime much despite wanting to. Trying to explain the value of a work that shows naked children is an obvious uphill battle one I would rather avoid.

Ugly: Transformation scenes are not exactly ugly but I could see some people having a serious issue with them.

"Deep down, you liked Togame, didn't you?"

4. Katanagatari

A journey to collect 12 swords told across 12 episodes that aired once per month. Gorgeous artwork and animation mark this show as something special but its the characters and the dialog/philosophy that drives things home. This series also has one of my favorite endings in an anime ever.

Good: Gorgeous artwork and animation. Brilliant Ending.

Bad: Sometimes the dialog drags on without much purpose.

Ugly: The 3rd episode is a troll(an awesome one that that)

"The ones who put on the act of common sense where wrong. Those who cried where right. We the lonely, were more human."

3. Angel Beats!

I can picture Phisu burning manga in a rage fit over this right now. but here it is as my number 3. The best I can do to console anyone reeling from this is to say.. well at least its not my number 1! Honestly my thoughts about this show really can't be put into a format that is conductive to this blog so instead if you wish to read my thoughts on the anime you can find them here. http://www.japanator.com/angel-beats-my-thoughts-spoilers--15413.phtml

Good: Wonderfully crafted life after death drama. Awesome OST my favorite for the year. A good mix of comedy and drama. TK!

Bad: Shoddy production values particularly in the backgrounds. They are always pretty.. just sometimes they change size and shape at random. Guilty of mood whiplash. (although many of my all time favorites are.)

Ugly: The worst of if sees a shelf in the background go from being a few feet high to 10 + feet in the air.

"Get up, monster. Hurry up and regenerate. I'll have you repeat this suffering until you're dead."

2. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Rarely do I feel like a TV anime show is perfect in every aspect to be more exact I can only think of one anime that does everything right and nothing wrong even my number 1 all time favorite Spice and Wolf is unable to make this mark. Brotherhood pulled it off. Thank you BONES for revisiting this anime and following through with it's original plot. This anime is immune to my Good Bad and Ugly. To call this a masterpiece is really the only way I can do it justice.

"I'm so hungry I'm about to die."

1. Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya

Choosing Kyoto Animations movie as my number 1 almost feels like cheating. Another example of animation that borders on perfect. Here it is all the little details and the passion that Kyoani put into making this that birthed a masterpiece. At first Yuki steals the show but she is ultimately put to shame by the amazing voice acting of Kyon. Any fans of the series who have not seen this really should get around to it. You will not be disappointed.

Anyway that's it! any comments, corrections, or criticism are much appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Great, extinsive list. Should switch one and six, but it's great regardless.
thanks for not including P&S
Awesome list and very well written.
Moe Nagato. That is all.
Great list. You must be some sort of anime watching machine!
LIIIIIIIIIIFFFFFEEEESSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGG!
How the hell did you manage to watch so many shows!?

Regardless, nice list. I will tell you a few things though.

1) You want a sports anime that's unpredictable? Please check out Big Windup if you haven't already. I won't spoil anything, but victories aren't a guarantee.

2) Amagami SS definitely gets better after the first arc. I'll be honest, the first arc was my 2nd least favorite in the entire show and if Sex Hair hadn't had such sexy hair, I probably would've dropped it entirely. Now if the 2nd arc fails to win you over, than feel free to drop it as you've already watched one of the top 3 arcs and remained unimpressed.

3) I've never even heard of Break Blade before but you make it sounds like a worthy addition to the Mecha genre so I'll look into it.
I didn't know movies were allowed! lol, The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya was sooooo damned good :D Good List ^_^
I can’t argue with anything’s placement here, (although with the gem theme I would have called the Honourable Mentions section “Diamonds in the rough”). All in all I think it was a good year, there might not have been many “blow your face off oh my god this changes everything” shows but there was some decent quality about.
Moe Nagato is the only thing that matters this year/decade/century.

And It's nice to see Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou get some love.

Good list, I can't really argue with anything as there is a lot there I have not seen.
@Setre Thank you!

@Aquagaze *Hides... >_>

@Bohan Liebert
Not including P&S was a pretty easy choice for me as I really didn't enjoy it at all.

@Handy
That is a good idea! If I write one of these up again next year I will keep it in mind. As for the year in general it may not be the best ever but it was certainly better then those who are crying about the end of the industry would have you believe and has left me feeling positive about the year to come.

@Squishynin, Itsa Timmy, & syphonicsniper
Indeed it may be a bit cheesy for me to say so but moe Nagato stole my heart as well the number one spot on my list. I can only hope Kyoto Animation will make more movies based off the renaming books.

@Gee-Man & @Dragonzigg
And this is just the new stuff and does not include One Piece or Fairy Tail or the entire Nanoha saga which I also watched earlier this year. Honestly I didn't realize just how much anime I had watched this year until I read my own list. It helps that my friends watch nearly as much anime as I do and that we are usually all just hanging out on Ventrilo while we do it.

One of my friends who loves sports anime and sports in general has been saying similar things about Big Windup. I'll need to give it a shot soon as I clear up my watching list a bit.

As for Break Blade I was pretty impressed by it and surprised that it went completely under the radar. Whenever the next movie comes around I might just do a blog on the show in an attempt to draw some attention to as it seems most people I talk to have no idea what it is.
Great List and good choices Lifesong.

I know I said this before but I am glad to see that you enjoyed Daimaou since so far you are the first person on J-tor to check out a series I was talking about that was rarely mentioned during the spring when I was writing my blog on defending the show while doing a diagnosis for it during the doctoring up anime musing. It still brings me joy to this day.

I have been wanting to see Break Blade for a while since a friend of mine who is a mecha fanatic (mostly in the real type department) was reading the scans of the manga online and he would say nothing but pumped up praises about it whenever he brings it up without giving away or spoiling anything. Its good to see another positive feedback about it.

On the subject of mecha movies, have you heard of this one maybe coming out this year in the form of Gothicmade created by Mamoru Nagano the creator of The Five Star Stories manga.
correction* he would say pumped up praises about the break blade movies.
@The Crimson Blade
I am glad you decided to blog about Diamaou as I would have missed out on it otherwise. And you may be happy to know at least two of my friends watched it as a result and ultimately enjoyed it as much as I did.

As for Gothicmade I have heard the name before but I don't really know anything about it. The trailer looks pretty cool though I will be sure to keep an eye open for it.
A new FMP would be awesome!

It's funny that you should mention original stories as I was looking over my top 100 all time list after making my 2010 list and noticed that almost everything on it is an adaption of some form. Counted it up just now and only 16 out 100 are original stories. Of those only 3 studios appear on the list more than once.(BONES Gainax and Sunrise) And of those 16 anime 8 of them are mecha series. Of those remaining 7 only 3 are really original concepts + 2 if count Gundam and Evangelion as original. I would also like to see more original stories it just seems like they have a lot stacked against them.(Having everything to prove and everything to lose can't be pretty from a studios perspective.)

There is also an argument to be made that the reason Gonzo started to go belly up was because it kept pumping out original stories no one wanted to buy.
Wow, reading this made me realize how much I missed last year.

Anyways, I'm surprised that you didn't mention what is probably the biggest knock against Angel Beats: The 26 episode show crammed into 13. For the same thing you knocked Index for, stuff gets COMPLETELY disregarded in the last few episodes of Angel Beats. And knowing that it's only 13 episodes long, you start to feel some of the middle episodes are kind of a "waste of time", if you will.
Don't get me wrong, I love the show too (aside from that) but I was wondering what your take on that fatal flaw was.
@SourGr8pes
Personally I think Angel Beats! could have been a bit longer while maintaining the same quality level. They could have worked through everyone's back story but I don't think it was really necessary or that it would have improved upon the story that was told.

Something Jun Maeda stories are always guilty of is cutting out the "fat" so to speak. With Angel Beats! I really didn't feel that it was rushed. Take Kanon for example one of the girls is terminally ill and they never do tell you what she is ill with. Honestly it was never really important. That method of story telling is part of the magic that makes Jun Maeda's stories work. its also the part that leaves some people really frustrated and wanting more. But in the end its not something I want to hold against Angel Beats!
Fortunately for Maeda, Kanon/Clannad had the time and space to flesh out stories and character development; a luxury that Angel Beats did not enjoy. I still feel there's plenty of "wait, what?" moments in the closing episodes..

Or maybe I'm just bitter that we still know next to nothing about The Man, TK.
@SourGr8pes
Those wait what!? moments are certainly there. The way I see it though they all make enough sense if you stop and think your way through them. VS something like index S2 where it is still convoluted anyway you look at it. Also in Angel Beats! all the main characters are completely resolved by the end the only ones to suffer are the side characters.

Kanon's and Clannad's endings wind up feeling about the same despite having twice the episodes. I have had to explain the end of Clannad After Story to more of my friends then I have Angel Beats! Air on the other hand is an example of a Maeda story that is rushed due to only having 13 episodes. I think the big difference here is that Angel Beats! was an anime original story and in my opinion fit much better into a 13 episodes than a preexisting work could have. All that said though.. I too would have liked more Angel Beats! It's just that wanting more is not something I feel I can hold against it.
