New Lupin III series might premiere in April

Toho Cinemas announced last weekend during the Lupin III 40th anniversary event that the infamous scoundrel might be getting a brand new animated series this April. According to reports, the first promotional trailer for the show will be shown on March 18th during a second event to be held at Tokyo's Roppongi Hills theater. Lupin III manga creator Monkey Punch and a handful of surprise guests are expected to attend.

The news comes as a pleasant surprise to fans disappointed about NTV's failure to deliver a new Lupin III series during the fall of last year. Unable to wrap up the project, the television network eventually re-imagined the series as a 90-minute TV special titled Lupin III: Blood Seal- Eternal Mermaid. Directed by celebrated animator Yoshiharu Sato (Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service), the OVA aired in Japan last December.
