Nick Simmons addresses Bleach tracing, blames manga photo

I'm using the above header because it's the face I imagine some folks were making after they accused Nick Simmons, son of KISS rocker Gene Simmons, of plagiarizing multiple manga - most notably Bleach - in the process of creating Incarnate, published (and then halted) by Radical Comics. Now he's released a statement addressing the charges, and unfortunately for the folks who made that face, it's hardly a Tiger Woods-worthy mea culpa.

The statement went as follows:

Like most artists I am inspired by work I admire. There are certain similarities between some of my work and the work of others. This was simply meant as an homage to artists I respect, and I definitely want to apologize to any Manga fans or fellow Manga artists who feel I went too far. My inspirations reflect the fact that certain fundamental imagery is common to all Manga. This is the nature of the medium.

I am a big fan of Bleach, as well as other Manga titles. And I am certainly sorry if anyone was offended or upset by what they perceive to be the similarity between my work and the work of artists that I admire and who inspire me.

I'm sure some manga artists might be miffed to think that Tite Kubo's character design for Zaraki Kenpachi is considered "fundamental imagery common to all manga." What I find perplexing is that a few folks fired back in Nick's defense, telling his detractors to consider their actions downloading scanlations and whatnot before lynching Simmons over copyright infringement. Sure, there's IP theft on both sides, but plagiarizing and piracy are two different things.

Legacy Comments

Does this mean Gene Simmons is gonna have to do another appearance on Detroit Metal City to appease the party or something?
That wasn't a apology. It was him being sorry that he got caught not being sorry for what he did.

It's pathetic and it makes me very angry to think that he might get away with this with nothing but bad publicity. However it's too soon to say if that will happen or if the punishment will be much more severe.
like in this site someone says http://comicsworthreading.com "it’s our -the readers, fans- fault that we’re upset because he didn’t mean anything bad by it".

He's not apologizing, he's just hiding behind daddy's influence. What a waste of flesh.

Ha! He thinks he's a manga artist! He officially gets a Douche Bag Award. Good job!
Props for the Genta/ShinkenGold header pic.
I used to trace pictures out of my old coloring books when I was a kid. Does that make me a Manga Artist too?
I once traced a whole bunch of Calvin and Hobbes comics for fun. I am now Bill Watterson!
People tried to defend him by saying reading scanlations is illegal? That's not a defense and it's a total non-sequitur. That would be like me getting caught gutting someone and saying that the police are probably pedophiles.
This is really shitty. He stole someone else's work. A lot of American comics do this and I hate it.

If it was photographs, I would excuse it. But this is taking a comic from somewhere else and using it as your own. That's thew worst kind of anything.
At least scanlators implore readers to support the original artist.
Yeeeaaaahhhh, when you've traced an entire page & even take from DeviantArt, I don't think it's considered "homage".
Hahahaha, what a load of bullshit. Whatever, he'd better find a different career because nobody is going to publish any of his works let alone buy them.
Maybe if he completely hides under a pseudonym and changes his ways, but wait... that'd involve A)Giving up i'm-a-celeb-son-easy-modo B)Actually learning how to draw. Too bad...
That's just BS to the BS power. When I first saw "Simmon's work," I thought is was some idiot's poor coloring attempt at Kubo's work.
@Mad March Harris: Right on! That post made me laugh. There really is no logical connection of any kind in that lame defense.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but didn't he initially deny having even known Bleach?
Something to the effect of "I've never heard about this; why would you name a series after detergent?"

It's one thing to copy and make a webcomic, but he opened a whole new can of worms by getting it published and and trying to make money off of it.
@Parasepsis-Ezza:
That was a troll posing as him.

Also, lolnicksimmons.
@tirkaro
Thank you for the correction.
