NISA replacement discs shipped, your mileage may vary photo

For many of us, the replacement discs for Toradora! and Persona -Trinity Soul- should be arriving shortly. Mine came just the other day, but I have to admit that I was a little surprised to see them -- there were a number of scratches on the disc, both on the label and on the data portion of the disc.

In the header photo (larger version in the gallery), you can see the regular Toradora! disc on the left -- relatively unscathed after a playthrough or two. The disc on the right, though -- the replacement disc -- came with a serious number of scratches on it. It doesn't appear as though the disc had a key or anything taken to it, and it plays just fine, but it is visually surprising.

I called NISA to ask about this, and they've had scattered complaints about discs coming to customers scratched. Of course, Nippon Ichi is dedicated to making sure its customers are happy, so be sure to drop them a line if you're having issues.

What surprised me even more, though, was what happened when I popped the disc in -- ghosting issues. Now, my discs seemed to have a bit of a white-washed look to them, and I ordered the replacement discs just to be safe. As it turned out, these new discs had more serious ghosting issues. They weren't as bad as some of you were seeing, but they were noticeable, as opposed to no ghosting issues on my original disc. Again, this is just my experience, and may not be happening for the majority of you (I know it isn't for DarkSorrow29), but it's happening to me and it should be brought up.

So, the statement "your mileage may vary" is key here. Be sure to let us know in the comments and our forums what your situation is -- did the discs turn out fine? Are there new issues? Are they scratched? We'll keep you updated on the story as we hear more from Nippon Ichi.

MOAR Toradora:

Legacy Comments

That is unfortunate. It looks to me like they sent you someones used discs instead of new ones..

I have been lucky enough to receive an original that from what I have watched appears to have no ghosting. Its a shame NIS is having so many issues with these discs I hope it does not stop them from licensing future anime.
I haven't had a chance to watch the replacement DVDs yet, but mine appear to be scratch-free.
Stuff like this scares the crap out of me because I have a bad habit of buying shows and games and not playing them till much later. -_-
Mine were a little scratched, but play fine. No ghosting and the colors are better. Hope it gets worked out in the end since Toradora is such an awesome anime.
This is one of the reasons that pro-piracy activists talk in favor of piracy. And I can say that I agree with them on this. I had bought myself a nice videogame, to then find out that it was scratched and unplayable after a certain stage. Unfortunately, where I live stores don't give you replacement discs (then we hear conspiracy rumours about companies making defective discs ON PURPOSE so people would buy their products TWICE, and they don't sound that far-fetched after all). The worst was when I purchased a rare anime movie... the disc was so delicate that its center cracked when you pulled it from the container.

Since then I've preferred to buy bootlegs and burned fansub DVDs. Sure, sometimes they do have quality issues. But at least I didn't spend around $200 bucks per season before finding out that my collection was ruined.
@Rick777 I'm shocked by the idea that you think pirated anime has BETTER quality than commercial dvds. Bootleg dvds are either straight rips of US dvds and thus at best similar in picture/sound quality (and often worse)or they are fansubs where the quality is streaming quality and thus is greatly inferior in a/v to actual commercial discs. Commercial dvds are better quality in almost every instance.

The prevalence of bad commercial dvds is also overstated, 99% of new anime dvds come to their owners in perfect condition with no issues. In the small fraction of cases when this happens 99% of the time the company that makes the discs also does the right thing and allows people to get replacement copies as we have seen here with Toradora and when Bandai was having duplication issues due to moving to a new dvd duplication company. The retailer you buy the dvds from will also usually be willing to replace your defective dvd as well.

And of course there is the bigger issue that when you buy bootlegs the only people you are supporting are the pirates, not the people that make the anime or the companies/people that work hard to translate the series and bring them to the US. Pirates are making money off of those people, leeching revenue that they rightly deserve.
I guess I never thought to check the discs. Mine have the crosshatch pattern of the inside of the sleeve scratched onto them, probably from going through too many automatic sorting machines. Watched the first disc already and didn't have any playback problems. Ghosting is gone and colors are better so I'm a happy camper and won't pursue this any further.

@ Brad The labels aren't exactly the same. There should be a regional code below the Dolby logo on the replacements. If it's not there, you got old discs.

@ Rick777 Where do you live? I have never had any issues with anything I've boughten, and I buy used games all the time.
My discs also have that crosshatch pattern in them. Obviously this is what happens when you use cheap disc sleeves like these, but you can't really blame NISA for trying to save a little money since they're already sending these replacements out for free.

Watched watched the problem episodes I found, despite my urge to marathon the entire thing, and didn't catch any ghosting. I'll have to check all of the episodes later, though.
My copy was just fine. I didn't need to order a replacement. Kind of feel sorry for Nippon Ichi.
@Neonie: Totally. I've been fallowing NISA for years and years, and part of being a loyal supporter is seeing these fumbles happen from time to time.
Well, here's to Vol. 2.
my replacement discs looks fine from the outside, but i haven't taken a close look at it yet... will try it out soon~
well mine had the cross patteren on them as well as scratches, have watched the first disc, and yes the video is an improvement, but since mine is scratched I am getting skips, I tried 2 players, and I still get reading problems. will be contacting nis about it
If you are spending $200 on a series, you must have a time machine. Most series are $40 to $60 now. Also, people like you are the ones making it hard to find real stuff on eBay. Bootlegs should burn in hell no matter if it is anime, games, or movies. I think you are just like all the rest who look for some random reason to attempt to justify your piracy. Just saying, that excuse has been used before and it isn't even a good reason.
