NPR tries all the Japanese Kit Kat flavors, hates on photo

I don't know how many of the numerous flavors of Japanese Kit Kat candy bars you've tried, but I've lost count. I think the latest one was the new cookie crunch one, which I still have a couple of stashed away. Yep, I like them that much.

Really, I've liked all of them. No matter what they put out, I eat up and enjoy. But I don't think the NPR staff would say the same. Tokyo-based reporter Lucy Craft got some of her co-workers to try some of the bars, including flavors like soy sauce, ginger ale, and corn. They...didn't seem to like the fun flavors.

When reading their quick descriptions I found myself getting defensive! These little bars of joy were being called things like "plain weird" (Royal Milk Tea) or  "It smells gross. I can't taste anything" (Soy Sauce). One guy calls the Corn flavor the "NASTIEST THING I HAVE EVER EATEN," capital letters intended. Later, near the end, some even declined to sample any more. Wait, what?! You guys too good for free candy?

Here's what finally killed me. IMO, the two best flavors are Grean Tea and Creme Brulee. About half of the testers enjoyed Creme Brulee, but nearly all bitched about Green Tea. One threw out a one-word rating: "Bland."

YOU KNOW WHAT? YOU'RE "BLAND!" You're "GROSS!" ALL OF YOU ARE STUPID! Take your little round-eye food that tastes like sugar on top of sugar and have fun with THAT. YOUR...YOUR MOUTH IS BROKEN AND YOUR TASTEBUDS ARE STUPIDHEADS! NYAH!

Legacy Comments

Most of those I haven't tried so I can't comment but my friend brought some assorted candy back from a business trip to Japan and I tried the corn flavor and I have to say I kinda agree with NPR. Soy Sauce wasn't bad though. On a side not Norwegian candy is the worst candy I have ever tasted.
Those Bastards! How dare they mock the Green Tea Kit Kat! They don't deserve to have them!

I miss the Cherry Blossom & Green Tea Kit Kat! They are easily the greatest Candy Bar ever conceived by Human Kind!

I'll show them, I won't donate to NPR but spend that money on different flavored kit kats! HA! I win this round PUBLIC RADIO!
Okay, seriously Japan? I mean, different flavors of kit kat? awesome, are we gonna get mint, oreo, peanut butter, or- No, of course we get bizzare flavors.

I can understand how NPR would feel. I mean, jesus. Its a goddamn chocolate bar. Why the FUCK would you think CORN would be a good flavor. Have you tasted chocolate before? And soy sauce especially. What. The. Fuck.

Choose some coherent flavors, goddamit.

Thats like telling someone that your coming out with some new kinds of burgers that have, like, marshmallows and grapefruit as toppings.
"Thats like telling someone that your coming out with some new kinds of burgers that have, like, marshmallows and grapefruit as toppings. "

AWESOME IDEA! Throw some of the marshmallow cream from a jar on there and throw in some grapefruit...I can totally see that working!
Royal Milk Tea and Valentine's Passion Fruit represent.
"Why the FUCK would you think CORN would be a good flavor"

Uh? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_Pops ?
I have a new appreciation for coconut flavor now.
Oh you Americans and how you hate and fear everything that is weird and different, yet hide behind words like "diversity" just so you can feel less guilt for fucking up the world.
There was a coconut kit-kat???

DO WANT!
Haha, I love how people are accusing Americans of being close-minded because of what? FREAKING CANDY. Look, some people have different tastes, that's a part of life. It's not our fault if we can't stomach the idea of certain flavors and some otaku love it because it happens to have been made in Japan. I love soy sauce, it's the lifeblood of tons of my favorite Asian foods, but does that mean I'd like it on my chocolate? Not necessarily. Does that make me a close-minded asshole? Apparently so.

All said, I'd still love to at least try out green tea and creme brulee flavor. Those sound absolutely delicious.
@Gee-man

Exactly. This is candy. This means war.
Hey dude, I've eaten a wasabi Kit Kat. Figure that cancels out any haters in the candy war.
Thank you Dale, thank you. You have given me a new goal to go for one day, to try every Kit Kat flavor ever made. Its unfortunate that we only got stuck with chocolate in the US, since this is the first time I head that Kit Kat has different flavors.

To be honest I would prefer all those flavors over mint mixed with chocolate(though for some reason the ice cream is more tolerable for me due to the milk I guess) any day of the week. Corn actually sounds goods and it might be better than candy corns. The wasabi one might be like the Mexican chile lollipops except there is no sweet candy pop waiting in the center of all the spiciness. I bet green tea flavor is good since I love the ice cream flavor and better yet mix the two for double the tea goodness. The rest of the flavors like strawberry cheesecake sound interesting and amazing.

Its unfortunate that the Tate's comic and the Japanese food store in my college area don't carry these Kit Kats but one day I will hunt them down. I have a feeling too that I will enjoy them also since I am a big fan of foreign treats.
Green tea kitkats bland? I FUCKING HATE U!!
There are nothin but delish!
Corn sounds gross, but I don't like corn very much anyway. D:
Wait, corn doesn't sound bad. Ever had sweet corn? I've had puffed sweet corn crisp snacks and wasn't that weird.
I'm so angry right now.
Royal Milk Tea + Green Tea rocks! >_<
Corn would be nasty in any other form other than real corn.
:) Dale is a very passionate food critic. I can't say I'd enjoy all those flavors, but not because its Japanese, just.. because. But I agree with much American candy-- sugar flavored sugar.. and then, its not even pure sugar, its processed crap with a load of HFCS on the side.

Which is why, Mari Hikiko, doesn't even eat most candy!
(that's right, I keep getting weirder..)
The Green Tea and Sakura flavors are amazing.
YES! Represent the goodness of all the flavors of kit kat bars!

We know they are just jealous of the creativity and awesome-ness of Japanese Kit kat bars!!!!
So in Japan there's this thing called "kikan gentai," or seasonal promotion. For maybe a month or two they release very distinct spin-offs of flavors both for promotional and market-probing purposes so the flavors will be as numerous as they are funky. Often you'll see really strange flavors just for the sake of strangeness, but whether trying something new/weird is a good thing is up to you. Shiso Pepsi anyone?.
Japanese culture has a deep appreciation for the seasons, so many flavors reflect this (cherry blossom = spring, passion fruit = summer). It's cool because you'll see many brands participating, like Fanta, Pringles and Kit-Kats.
Japan does not expect Americans who value saturation and volume to appreciate subtlety and evanescence in candy.
