Hang in there Brad at this rate we could still have K-On!!! University and after that K-On!!!! After Story. And lets not forget the very much needed Sawako spin off K-On!-1.
Also... is this not still technically season 2 ? I think you may be confusing some of your readers >_>
I watch this show every week and unironically enjoy the episodes to varying degrees. If you'd just abandon your sense of standards, Brad, you might see all the charm K-on!! oozes.
I really don't see why everyone needs to hate on K-ON! so much. It's not like it invented Moe or anything Moe was around LONG before K-ON! It's a fun simple show to just sit back and relax with. It doesn't claim or try to be any more then that. It's like people are expecting this show to be the best thing since sliced bread and because it's not they do nothing but bash it. Honestly it's just a fun slice of life show if you don't like it don't watch simple as that. We don't need to hear you constantly bitching at the show and people who enjoy it.
"I really don't see why everyone needs to hate on K-ON! so much"
It's because people talk about it so goddamn much. I gave it a try, I really did. Three times. I don't see what you people see in this show, and this is coming from a guy who adores Hidamari Sketch, which is the same thing, but with art.
So who's up for some Russian Roulette when they announce the inevitable 3rd season? Brad? Buddy, I know you want to.
I have to say all the bitching about K On! is pretty pointless. Sure, its not the most artful show out there, but hell, theres a lot of total crap out recently (i.e. the last 2 years).
I have to say I read more K-On! bashing on here and other sites than I see anyone bragging it up. I can never bring myself to watch shows people tell me to watch over and over again, so if that had happened with K-On! I wouldnt watch it (just as I will never watch Gurren Lagaan or Higurashi, not because I think their bad, but because so many people kept going on and on about how awesome they were that I lost all interest in even trying)
To be fair I think people should just realise that for all the K-On! bashing that goes on, if I thought about it I could give you three reasons why any anime EVER is flawed, including all the ones I like. So whats the big deal? K-On! is fluffy and stupid, so what? If every show had to have some deep double meaning or artistry to it then there would be about 5 new shows a year.
Im not particularly fighting in K-On's corner here, but seriously, if you think about it you can tear holes in any show, so whats the big problem with K-On?
The issue isn't as much with K-On! itself, but the fact that so many other shows were created in response to it. Let's use Gurren Lagann and Higurashi as examples. Both are great anime in their own ways, but you don't see any anime that are blatant copies/imitations of them. I've yet to see another anime portray f*cked up horror as creepily as Higurashi (in years after it was aired) or a (recent) mecha anime as hot blooded as Gurren Lagann. Maybe they are both overhyped, but we certainly don't see an overload of imitation anime trying to cash in on the success of those two anime.
Meanwhile though, there are a lot of anime that follow the K-On! rubric of "cute schoolgirls getting into antics=a huge f*cking success".
That's exactly what I am talking about. People bitch about it because of the influx of Moe anime and they blame K-ON! for that. But Moe stuff like K-ON! was around before it ever came along and there were quite successful ones. I don't think there were any more or any less moe shows because of K-ON! The year or so before it was made there was a CRAP TON of moe all over the place. Where did that come from? Sure as hell wasn't because of K-ON! as it hadn't even happened yet.
What the hell? This is old. And no, a third season would be bad; this isn't Clannad, no one wants to see Yui get Azusa pregnant. Second and first seasons, however, are and were quite wonderful.
The only show I see as being directly influenced by K-On! is Sora No Woto. And honestly that's only in the art style which was not even original to Kyoto Animation it was first seen in Kannagi so if someone is to blame its A-1.
I seriously think(or would like to think) we are beating a long dead horse at this point. The truth is that hate for K-On! existed before the first episode even aired. Partly because K-On! followed Lucky Star and partly because it meant Kyoto Animation was busy working on something not FMP or Key inspired.
If you go back to the origin of all the K-On! bashing moe was not even the initial complaint. If anyone aside from Kyoto Animation had animated K-On! I doubt we would even hear about it aside from those who enjoy it. It seems to me that K-On! is hated now not because its awful but because its the popular thing to do. The show hardly warrants the polarization it receives.
If there's more manga material, then yes. But ONLY on the condition that they take a two year break in order to allow the manga to get far enough ahead to the point where they wouldn't have to use such terrible filler.
Third season? Mr. Rice it warrants a forth!
@HaloZ You are correct, K-ON!! is a show about nothing. I was beginning to think I was the only one to get the Seinfeld similarity.
I LOVE K-On (Slice of life in general, like YKK and Azumanga). Whoever wants to bash it and blame it (pointlessly) for whoring moe or whatever lame excuse, that's alright, everyone is entitled to their opinions. Just a reminder, K-On is not the first slice of life to have a female-only cast, and certainly not the first to burn our hearts with moe.
Sure it deserves a third season! I sure don't see why not! As a show it's really not that bad. The humour is well.. middle of the road.. but it's an honest attempt, and really can genuinely funny at times. As for the "moe" factor, I seriously prefer it to the considerably more sleazy end of the "cutiegirls spectrum". Take for example, KissXSis. That is a show composed of pure sleaze. I'd take K-ON over something like that any day. I think K-ON is a step in the right direction, as long as that direction is "away from KissXSis".
@Mari Hikiko: It happens with every insanely popular anime. The only issue I see with having a discussion at all is that there has been just as popular moe slice of life titles in the past and the reasons to "hate" this one might as well be applied to the other titles (which ironically some of those people don't hate).
I think this K-On-hate has more to do with not wanting to be in the mainstream train or wanting to feel smarter than to fall into this merchandise, whoring series than actually hating it. But hey what do I know, I just like what I like, be it GITS or Orusuban Ebichu.
@Doctor Tran: I too, welcome an anime not so bent on shoving tits and ass to my face every two minutes. I'm A-ok with it most of the time, but geezus, sometimes it's too much.
@ReiBooi:
It's more so an irritation b/c you go to look at the series line up for the season and 50-90% of the titles involve cute girl getting into situation x. With K-ON being the most popular and easiest to remember it'll automatically become public enemy # 1.
I believe that people that doesn't like K-On! is looking for something that simply isn't there. There's nothing to understand, nothing to discover, nothing to be afraid of. It's there only to be enjoyed. The perfect eye-candy. With top notch character design, palette, animation, jpop and voice acting.
It won't never suprise anyone with "amazing" ideas.
It's the "Azumanga Daioh" of 2010.
It's hugely popular and it will be cloned, and the clones will be almost all disappointing, at least for another 10 years (yeah it's a profecy... repent ! ;-)
I'll be anjoying every minute of it while it's still being produced.
Then I'll spend my time missing it.
I hope K-on lasts until at least K-0n!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love that show so much!!!!!! OMG OMG OMG please never die.
