I really cant believe that Funimation had no security whatsoever. I think I'm more irritated by that than anything else. Funimation really drop the ball here.

I wasn't looking forward to this because I don't care for One Piece.

I haven't watched One Piece since filler episodes came on a while back, so I don't really care about the leak, but with finally free time over summer I was catching up on FMA. Last week I searched the internets for episodes and found all but episode 5 available from sources other than Funimation, but since that was the episode I needed to watch, I watched episode 5 and then 6 on Funimation's site. I would have kept using it too had they not pulled FMA episodes for no reason. Who are you punishing here, Funimation? The viewers who aren't savvy enough to find episodes anywhere else? Because I can just go watch FMA elsewhere. And what about all the people who watch FMA but could care less about One Piece? Why are you punishing them?

Now that I know they'll pull episodes on a whim, Funimation will not be the first place I look to watch episodes of anything. I find this to be a poor move on Funimation's part, especially if their security was as lackluster as that other article says.

You're jumping the gun here, herekitty. In all likelihood it could be the Japanese companies pulling the plug as a result of the incident. It certainly looks that way to me as One Piece has stopped streaming on Hulu and Crunchy Roll.

Alternatively, Funi could have temporary pulled the episodes while they attempt to change their security.

I think think if you are mad at Funimation you are getting angry at the wrong people. The fact is, that taking episodes like that and distributing them over the web is an illegal activity.

Funimations security may have been good or bad, but it doesn't really matter. If people are going to abuse their free service to engage in illegal activity you can expect someone somewhere to pull the plug until they can get it sorted out.

Its not like this was a fan sub that people go a hold of after the broadcast in Japan, subbed it themselves and then released it over the net. No, this is the official release with official subs, and it was distributed over the net prior to the original broadcast, not before. Hopefully they will get their system secured in an appropriate manner and put this stuff back on the web but if these episode continue to be hacked and released before they are even broadcast on TV you can expect that they will no longer be stored on servers that are easily accessible and that means no more simulcasting.

I think Funimation provides a great service, hopefully they can get everything fixed up, but IP holders have the right to protect their properties from illegal use. If someone is pulling the plug because they think hackers are going to threaten their revenue dollars, I don't think you can really blame them. There's a global recession, Japan's getting it particularly rough, the anime industry isn't producing revenue like it was a few years ago, I think they have the right to be concerned about their revenue stream. Remember, if product isn't profitable, it stops getting made.

So, I think the hackers are jerks. I hope Funi fixes things. I hope this type of service expands despite these troubles.

Look, I can related to being too broke and/or lazy to buy your anime. It's wrong, but at least it's understandable.

But this guy was either too dumb to realize the repercussions of his/her actions, in which case I pray they never reproduce, or (and I think this is more likely) they were being outright malicious. And that, I do NOT understand. What's with all the hate?

If the episodes are so valuable, why weren't they adequately protected? Don't they know how many teenagers don't have anything better to do than to screw around?

All I hear from them is whining and more whining. Just fix it the right way, apparently from the linked article they were aware of the shortcomings but did nothing but rename the episodes to try and plug the leak, security by obscurity does not work.

Hire a decent IT guy, there's thousands of people on the web that have no decency and will do this kind of crap if you don't secure your shit!

I'm not mad at Funimation; like I said, I think it's just generating bad publicity for them. I hadn't considered that someone else might have pulled the episodes, though. Hopefully they do get their security in order soon.
