I can't get enough of these lists from Oricon. Top 10 Gravure models, freshest young stars, and more -- they're just so much fun to discuss! The IGN list of the top 25 anime characters of all time really got us all talking recently, so I thought I'd share another list: the top 5 tearjerker RPGs. Here they are according to Oricon:

1. Final Fantasy X

2. Dragon Quest V

3. Final Fantasy VII

4. CLANNAD

5. Mother 2 (EarthBound)

This is the second list of this type that has been topped by Final Fantasy X (here's the first), and I've been surprised to see it both times. It's easily my favorite title in the series, and I'm used to listening to people heap hatred on me the moment I say so. I guess I ought to find Japanese Final Fantasy friends to talk to.

Of course, the others are killers too. I've only finished Dragon Quest V and Final Fantasy VII on that list (I'm ashamed to admit I have not finished Earthbound). And I have never played CLANNAD. What RPGs made you cry? Are any of them on this list?

I wholeheartedly agree. Those are some pretty tear-jerking stories.

Does Clannad even count as an RPG? cause throwing visual novels in the mix seems unfair.

Lost Odyssey should surely be on that list. The first short story in the game Hana's Departure had me crying immediately.

Not to mention there are points in which the main story itself gets really sad. Like at the end of the first disc.

I ADORE Lost Odyssey. Best tearjerker RPG in years, I think. :)

Lost Odyssey hands down. One of the few RPGs where just TEXT (ie. no voice acting, no animation, just words and sounds) could make me cry. And that's not even including the actualy cutscenes.

As for Final Fantasy X, I'm honestly not sure where all the love comes from. It was a good FF, but definitely not my favorite, or even second favorite, or third.

Mother 3 easily tops Mother 2 in the "tearjerker" department for so many reasons I can't talk about without spoiling anything.

Earthbound is a surprising choice, but it's nice to see it getting some much deserved love :3 No Mother 3 though?

I found it strange as well that Mother 2 topped Mother 3 in the tearjerker category. I personally got a bit misty eyed in Crisis Core. MGS3 also got me to boohoo as well.

I can't speak for any RPG's that were on the PS2 or later, but for old-school RPG's the one that moved me most emotionally was FFVI, thought IV V and VII were all excellent too.

As for the survey though... for some reason Oricon's 'surveys' always make me suspicious. This maybe isn't as suspicious as they're top 10 music rankings, but most of they're rankings are more of "which talent agency is paying us the most" as opposed to "which song/artist/actor/actress is the most popular".

Well, after reading the comments, I can say I'll definitely have to play Lost Odyssey sometime soon. Also, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who never got around to finishing Earthbound. It's a fantastic game and I love it to death, but I have a horrible habit of getting distracted by shiny things and wandering away, leaving fantastic games unfinished.

As far as Final Fantasy goes, I'd rank FFX above FFVII in terms of tearjerker-ness, even though I prefer FFVII better overall. Possibly that's because I was spoiled for Aeris's death long before I ever saw it in-game, but probably also because I prefer Cloud/Tifa over Cloud/Aeris, and I think Tidus/Yuna is adorable.

Final Fantasy X amazed me with its story development and undoubtedly the most emotional game I have ever played. Although the game itself is outdated now, and would be difficult to play through it again without getting tired of the repetitiveness, just thinking about it overwhelms you with a sense of warm 'epicness'.
Similarly Final Fantasy VII holds a lot of sentiment down to the strong story and etc ...
With FFXXIII on the horizon for PS3 with awe inspiring graphics, if it has half the story development of those above it will be utterly amazing!
