I was hoping for the Odaiba Gundam to make a surprise visit to New York City for New York Anime Fest, as part of the 30th Anniversary of Gundam. So, I made sure to stop by the NYAF booth, where I found not only Peter Tatara, but also Rob Napton of Bandai Entertainment. Well, I couldn't ask for a better opportunity, so I asked.
And you know what? They could do it. It'd only cost close to $1 million, but it's possible. The industry being as small as it is, I don't think it'd be too feasible for just Bandai or New York Anime Fest to pull this stunt off. It'd be cool as hell, having the Gundam standing in the Hudson river, or towering over the fields of Central Park, but how to pay for it?
Well, I am proposing this to the industry: Everyone pitches in to bring the Gundam over. Ignoring rivalries and whatnot, I think if everyone pitched in -- from Shogakukan, Shueisha, and Navarre, to Anime News Network, Whiskey Media, and Modern Method, we could pool together the money to bring this Gundam to the United States.
Plus, if the fans join in -- a dollar or two from each fan -- and we could easily make this possible. I'm totally serious about this. It will happen.
