I don't know a lot about Kannagi, except that the Haruhi and Lucky Star people helped out with it, and that everyone in it looks like they fell out of KyoAni's K-On! sketchbook (or vice-versa, whichever came first).
I'm pretty sure some of you know more, and now Bandai is there for you, with Kannagi (Crazy Shrine Maidens) Volume 1 is in stores now, with a subtitled, streaming version available via ANN's "Nagi-sama Official Fan Club" website. The first two episodes are available right now, with the next two available July 23, and the next two after that available July 30th. The DVD, though, contains all those episodes plus the seventh.
I might be late to the party here, but I think this is a great way to approach licensed anime releases. One of the big issues with getting otaku to spend money on DVDs is the ready availability of speedy fansubs. It seems Bandai is treating Kannagi the way it needs to be treated - as a TV series.
Those who don't want to pay full price for a DVD can catch the streaming episodes when they come out, but those who like the show enough can shell out for the DVD and get it early, with value-for-money in the long run. Better yet, it seems Bandai can at least make a little money off of the people who wouldn't bother paying, since the streams have commercial breaks. The high-quality localization certainly makes it worth dealing with a few ads.
Bandai is killing me licensing some of the most beautifully visuals shows (Kannagi, True Tears), and not delivering a Blu-ray release.
I want these bad, but cant bear to order them on standard DVD. :(
