Yeah, I agree with what you said about dubs and the people who say they're all bad.....some fans just need to open up and get a clue.

no, no, no, no all dubs do in fact "suck". Even if that is just my opinion--and certainly it isn't inconceivable that some people would like dubs more--I think it's a near-universally agreed on fact that the original japanese dub + subs is the better combination. I cannot for the life of me think of an anime that sounded better in the english dub than the original voice acting. In every case I've seen the english is toned down, or changed in dubious ways to conform to the original animation or for a younger, american audience. I do concede that the Japanese Voice Acting probably sounds better because we are not used to hearing it every day and thus cliched and bad writing and even some of the acting seems novel and well-crafted. IMHO the people who argue for dubs are just doing so to be "unique" or something to that effect. Meh, what a pointless debate lol. But yeah, watch the Death Note dub in english and tell me honestly that it is better. Still, I once again say that I haven't seen it all so there could be some fantastic english dub out there.
ALSO is there anyone else who hated Eva? EVeryone on Jtor seems to be a fan but I actually despised that show after I watched it. But that's a huge debate in itself. Love the podcast!

Well I like some in English and some in Japanese. The ones I liked more then the Japanese were Eva, Black Lagoon, Fullmetal Panic, Hellsing, and Hare+Guu. In some cases like with Elfen Lied, I found myself hating the voices of the guys in Japanese and liking the English better, but then the girls in English were bad and the Japanese was good. Maybe they should of combined it... Anyways not all dubs are bad and not all Japanese dubs are good. Some times I thought the voices didn't fit the characters but in English it did fit. *sigh* No matter what there will always be a dub and sub debate and people don't change their minds once they are made up.... (wow I typed alot...)

I certainly thought so before I started writing for anime publications, but then I learned that there are a LOT of pro-dub people out there.

The fact of the matter is that there are a lot of casual anime fans out there who watch anime exclusively on TV in the U.S. These fans are vastly under-represented online because they're *not* hardcore fans, they *don't* visit anime websites, but they are a significant chunk of the market. As a result, hardcore fans online get the impression that almost everyone prefers subs like they do-- which is not necessarily the case.

...Which leads to one of the core dichotomies of the U.S. anime industry. Companies try to court those big, mainstream audiences-- that's where the real sales numbers come from. But at the same time they have to not piss off the tastemakers (i.e. the hardcore fans who watch fansubs) too bad.

Like I've said before, people often confuse the most vocal with the majority. It's just as Giapet said, a great deal of anime fans watch anime solely on TV, and great deal don't care for subs yet don't go online and raise hell towards sub fans. It's impossible to ignore the popularity of dubs when you look around. With people like Vic Mignogna and Laura Bailey being hero worshiped, and with VA guests panels at cons constantly packed to the brim the evidence is everywhere. Nowadays it's not uncommon for a company to outsource the dub to the original cast when they obtain an OVA or sequel that the other company has the original series.

It's pretty widely believed, if not necessarily universally accepted, that the dub for Cowboy Bebop is supiorer to it's Japanese version. You're often find sub fans who swear at the inferiority of dubs yet make an exclusion of Bebop. What's funny, however is that if you look around you'll find various other series be made exceptetions to the rule that some fans believe as sacred canon. "All dubs sucked EXCEPT FLCL/Trigun/Azumanga Daioh/GitS or whatever dub THEY liked.

I also find it hard to take it seriously when people attest to the inablilty to surpass the original when they can't even speak Japanese themselves, and are thus unable to completely asses acting in that language.

Also, on a side note, it's not possible to outdo Chris Patton as Sosuke. It's just too good.

First off, I have to say I'm a recent new fan of your podcasts^^ I watched the last four of your podcasts within a few days and enjoyed doing it. I have to say I'm a fan of both dubs and subs. My two favorite dubs are: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Elfen Lied myself.

Kodomo's censoring in the anime is off-putting for me since it ruins some of the jokes too much, so I'm not if I'll keep watching it :P

if you want anime to reach a wider audience instead of being some underground thing then quit bitching.

Some Dubs are great like Ghost in the Shell and Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo.

Other Dubs suck and are annoying, depending on which company you go with you can pretty much know the Dubs are going to be either crap or awesome quality.
