It's in celebration of the launch of Miyazaki's latest film to hit the US. According to ANN, the film debuted strongly, taking the #9 box office spot with sales of $3,506,000 during its opening weekend. It showed in 927 theaters across the country -- pretty respectable for an anime film,
These opening weekend figures makes Ponyo the 8th highest grossing anime film to run in the US. Congrats, Ghibli.
Did any of you make it out this weekend to see Ponyo? Or were you all at District 9?
The shots of the underwater town/streets were beautiful and dreamlike in that Miyazaki fashion, which I loved. outside of that, I felt it was just kinda 'there'.
