Ponyo hits box office at #9, pulls in $3.5 million photo

You can't hear me, but I'm singing the Ponyo song right now. The good one -- not that crap one.

It's in celebration of the launch of Miyazaki's latest film to hit the US. According to ANN, the film debuted strongly, taking the #9 box office spot with sales of $3,506,000 during its opening weekend. It showed in 927 theaters across the country -- pretty respectable for an anime film,

These opening weekend figures makes Ponyo the 8th highest grossing anime film to run in the US. Congrats, Ghibli.

I saw Ponyo Saturday morning. It was decent. Probably my least favorite of the Ghibli films (the one's I've seen actually). It was good, just nothing exciting (personally).

The shots of the underwater town/streets were beautiful and dreamlike in that Miyazaki fashion, which I loved. outside of that, I felt it was just kinda 'there'.

I saw it Sunday evening. It was really cute, the dubbing was spectacular. The story could have used more antagonisim.

my AMC was showing Ponyo but I watched district 9 and I regretted it. :(

I saw Ponyo Friday and District 9 Saturday. Quite the contrast! I did like Ponyo a lot, but I felt like something was missing from it. Not sure what. It was still really enjoyable for me though, and I'm glad to see it's doing well so far.

I saw D9 at midnight Thurs/Fri. Saw Ponyo 14 hours later at 2pm. No I did not sleep in the theatre.
 


Ponyo all the way. Better than Totoro, which was my previous fav Miyasaki. (More of a Takahata fan, myself.) Was lucky enough to see it in a crowd of anime fans (instead of what I was expecting, a kid circus) and really enjoyed the enthusiasm in the audience. Favorite characters seemed to be Ponyo, Lisa and Fujimoto. (Fujimoto got instant laughter just for showing up in a scene.)

@Jak Cadden: I saw the D9 midnight showing in my theater too. D9 was pretty good too, so staying up late was worth it. Then, on Saturday, I went to see Ponyo with a friend and my Mom. Both movies were worth the money for me.

Saw both withing 24 hours of each other. Wow, that was an emotional rollercoaster. First I watch Sci-Fi Apartheid with LIGHTNING GUNS, then I watch a goldfish who wants HAAAAAAM.
