Animation-stealing moderately sized enemy crabs

I think most of us would agree that Lost Universe, recently re-released by Right Stuf, is a pretty damn mediocre show. However, in Japan, it's reputation is more infamous than anything. You see, Lost Universe actually aired in an incomplete state. The anime industry in Japan was coming off a mini-boom at the time spurred by the success of EVA and other recent shows, and as a result time was tight, budgets were thin, and animators were worked to the bone. Sometimes things simply weren't getting done on schedule, as the original intro sequence to Lost Universe shows. Considering that the intro sequence is usually used to help draw people into a show, it's amazing that the staff of Lost Universe let it air in an unfinished state - for several episodes, even! There are even apologies throughout for the missing animation. Amazing.

Oh, but that's not all the hilariously horrible animation Lost Universe has to offer. The real meat lies just beyond the cut.

Faced with a time crunch, many studios around this time outsourced animation to Korean studios (already a common industry practice, but far more utilized during this time). Unfortunately, Lost Universe's producers didn't do any quality control checks to anticipate the sort of stuff that Sam Ho Studio would turn out for them. They also provided Sam Ho with the barest of materials needed for production - just basic scripts and character model sheets. The result was the original version of episode #4, Yashigani Houfuru - an episode with animation quality so terrible that it needed to be completely re-done for the Japanese home video release. It also coined the term "Yashigani" (lit. "coconut crab") among Japanese fans as a decriptor for jerky, off-model, or just plain horrible looking animation. The re-done episode is what we've seen on our VHS/DVD releases of Lost Universe - unfortunately, neither ADV or Right Stuf has seen fit to include the original "yashigani cut" of episode 4 as a valuable historical extra on the discs. Boo! Thankfully, however, a kind soul has found the original episode and uploaded it to Youtube. It's pure Japanese dialogue, but the images onscreen speak volumes.

I think I prefer this to the "fixed" version, honestly. At least this one's actually entertaining, if only inadvertently.

Ha that's the worst animation i've ever see, well except for tokyo crystal mew.

And doesn't Zetsubou sensei do the same thing with their intro just in a cooler way?
I forgot that this aired on TV in Latin America. Did they use the original cut of this episode or the fixed version?
I remember being HYPED for this series the first time I went to school. Kinda glad I never got to see it. Then again, Slayers is one of the few series that I can still watch from the past.
(Lost Universe is kinda like the Jar Jar Binks version of Slayers)
