Economy hits Viz, company announces that they're restructuring

Economy hits Viz, company announces that they're restructuring photo

We've had rumblings of this already, with some of Viz's titles being de-listed by Diamond, along with their Original Content program being put on hold, but now we get real word that the manga megahouse is restructuring its company and issuing out layoffs.

Here's the quote of the day from Viz CEO Hidemi Fukuhara:

Viz Media is in the process of refining its focus and is restructuring to adjust to changing industry and financial market realities. Viz feels confident that with these changes, the company will be more streamlined to face the current economic climate.

So, no surprises there -- the manga industry has been due for a plateau, as I've been hearing from Rocket Bomber and comics212. Sure, the economy has an effect on the situation, but the manga industry has been leveling out, as we've already seen the fallout with Tokyopop. Viz has too strong of a lineup to really falter heavily, and Del Rey and Dark Horse seem to be more conservative with their choices. Yen is up in the air, with all their manhwa selections.

Well, here's to Viz getting through this, and I hope that all of the people who got laid off will be able to pull through on this -- it's certainly not an easy time to find a job.

Nooooo...

Oh well, this was coming anyway. Good luck to everyone from Viz looking for work, I guess.
Hope everyone laid off from Viz can find work soon. Viz itself should be fine.
