A few years back, I wouldn't have seen something like this coming, but these days, series that were once obscure eroge have managed to find their way into the mainstream. One such example is Fate/stay night. While I'm sure some of you have tracked down versions of the original adult visual novel, most of you have probably already heard about or have seen some of the animated series that was released in 2006. I was pretty impressed with how the franchise seamlessly transitioned from an adult game into an all-ages television show. The very next year, an all-ages version of the game was produced for the PS2 with full voice acting.

The anime itself was filled with plenty of intense action, and gave way to a countless number of AMVs that I came across at the various cons I've been attending over the last few years. Now, it seems Capcom is publishing an upcoming fighter based on the series, titled Fate/unlimited codes. Featuring over 17 unique characters, and boasting stunning 3d graphics, I couldn't wait to sit down with it, and I was recently given that opportunity.

Indeed, based on what I've played of the game so far, I'm fairly optimistic about the title. The characters were well animated and the graphics were very clean. The screenshots don't quite do it justice. The gameplay itself seemed very straight forward and complex manuvers such as half circles were removed in favor of simple directional commands such as left, right, down and up. This made playing the game infinitely easier considering the PSP d-pad and analog nub aren't very friendly to people with huge hands. Actually, I take that back, it's probably the same for everyone. I can't even begin to tell you the number of times I've ended up with cramps after playing a first person shooter on that system with the analog nub.

The story is similar to that of the anime in that it features the characters in master/servant relationships vying for the Holy Grail, which is said to grant anyone their wish. Don't worry, it's kept work safe, much to some of our chagrin. Each character has their own story mode, multiple costumes, some of which are exclusive to the PSP version of the game--it was previously released on the PS2 in Japan. The gameplay has also been re-balanced, though I have no idea what the specific changes were--the Japanese voice acting, on the other hand, remained intact.  I should also mention that the VS mode remains intact, but requires Ad-Hoc communication between systems.

Fate/unlimited codes will be one of the first PSP titles to be distributed online, with no current plans to be released on UMD. That being the case, PSPgo users will be prime candidates for the game, though it shouldn't stop anyone with a decent memory stick from downloading the title when it becomes available. You should be able to do that either via the Playstation Network or on the net via the Playstation Store. So far, things look good so I have high hopes for the title when it arrives in stores this September.
