Protip: Don't offer to partner with a manga publisher when hosting illegal scans of their IPs photo

This doesn't so much fall into the category of "news" as it is an example of extreme fail. As a scanlation site -- not a group, but rather a major site that distributes all of these titles -- you do not want to attract the attention of Viz, Del Rey, or any other publisher. I can assure you, they really don't want to work with you.

So, it's really not the best idea to draft up a letter to Viz about how you want to partner with them as a method of distributing all sorts of titles and promoting the talents of all the translators, editors, cleaners, etc. It's a noble intention in theory, but you have to think about it from Viz's standpoint.

They've got their own pool of talent that is doing them quite well, they're producing titles at a good rate, and already have a strong online viewer. What are you going to offer them? Your address so they can send a C&D letter for the site, so that you stop distributing translations of their licensed works.

Well, whatever their intentions were, it provided for some good laughs amongst the twitter crowd last night. Sadly, we only came up with the #MHfail hashtag towards the end of the conversation, otherwise I'd direct you to check it out. You can still see the hilarity of the community up in arms over at MangaHelpers, where they've tried to backpedal and explain everything to their loyal fans.

Yet it really leaves you to wonder how the Crunchyroll deals got worked out, doesn't it?
Wait a second... they wanted to make money off what the scanslators were giving them for free?
Wow, major fail.
Crunchyroll was the first thing I thought of, too. I wonder what the difference would be?
Well... The difference between Crunchyroll and these yo-yos is that CR came up with the money to pay licensing fees for the content they show. They didn't just start asking companies to let them distribute their work.

Why do I get the feeling from that letter that they are a group of 12 year olds?
Seriously though, it wasn't as blatantly fail of an idea as you're making it out to be. I mean, clearly this wasn't planned anywhere near as well as CR did it, but Brad, they ALREADY had received several CODs recently from Viz, so it wasn't like they jumped out into the open. (Basically I'm saying this wasn't a terrible idea IN THEORY.)

That said, they didn't execute it well at all.
@Jenny: Yeah, seriously. There's already hundreds of sites out there that will charge you a subscription fee to download scans/subs by teams who do it for free.
Firstly I'll introduce myself. I am Jack from NY and I work in a debt management company.

I just don't see any other companies getting as lucky as CrunchyRoll did ever again.
