I'm not the biggest Neon Genesis Evangelion fan. I have a lot of respect for the original series, but I didn't enjoy watching it. I personally think it had a lot of pacing and plotting issues that I felt could have been fixed if a little bit more planning had gone into the initial project. However it's undeniable that Eva changed the face of anime in both Japan and the west, influencing countless other works after it. If you don't at least respect a work like that, you're probably the type of person who likes watching kittens cry or something.
That being said, I've absolutely loved the recent films. In many ways they fix the pacing and character problems I had with the original work while keeping what I felt was actually effective originally. It feels more consistent which makes sense given that they have a template to work from now.
The wait for the third film, Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo has been excruciating. With all the changes the second movie made, I was practically at the edge of my seat waiting on news of a release date or any real information. Over three years later (!), a theatrical release is finally in sight.
Evangelion 3.0 will release in Japanese theaters on November 17 of this year in Japan, and you can bet I'll be there opening day to let you all know if it lives up to expectations.
A brief trailer was aired on a building wall in Shinjuku last night, which I've posted after the break. Keep in mind it's an off-camera video so it's not the most clear thing in the world. Hopefully there'll be a net release coming soon.
Give it to me now.
