It's time to say farewell to a true veteran of the old school: Goro Naya. The venerable voice actor passed away from chronic respiratory failure last week, at the ripe old age of 83.
Though he debuted as an actor nearly fifty years ago, Naya was best known in the role of Inspector Zenigata, of Lupin III, a role he played for nearly four decades, all the way up to the recent Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine series, where Koichi Yamadera (Cowboy Bebop's Spike) finally took up the mantle. He played other notable roles, too, including Captain Okita of Space Battleship Yamato and Kamen Rider's Shocker Leader. I, however, will remember him as Admiral Merkatz of Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
No matter the character though, Naya's talent and distinctly deep voice lent his performances an air of dignity, authority and experience unquestioned. He will be missed.
