Rock the charts: Japan's weekly box office numbers for 10/17 - 10/23
by Brad Rice, 10/26/2009

Welcome once again, faithful readers, to Rock the Charts, where we put on a show of Japan's top-grossing movies for the week. This week, we're seeing the debut of The Rebirth of Buddha, the Happiness Realization Party's anime film. I'm sure a lot of people went to check it out as a way to get some information about the cult. Reading about them, I worry that they might be something akin to the Aum cult from the mid-1990s.

Well, let's not worry about that so much and just get into this week's charts.

#1: Kaiji: Life Turnabout Game. 2nd week, pulling in $2.6 million.
#2: The Rebirth of Buddha. 1st week, pulling in $1.8 million.
#3: Fast and the Furious 4. 2nd week, pulling in $1.19 million.
#4: My Sister's Keeper. 2nd week, pulling in $840k.
#5: The Proposal. 1st week, pulling $687k.
#6: The Final Destination. 1st week, pulling in $588k.
#7: Samayou Yaiba. 2nd week, pulling in $581k.
#8: Villon's Wife. 2nd week, pulling in $454k.
#9: The Shock Labyrinth 3D. 1st week, pulling in $341k.
#10: 20th Century Boys 3: Redemption. 8th week, pulling in $311k.

I'll let you decide for yourself about the Happiness Realization Party, but they really don't sound like a good thing to me.
