Welcome once again, faithful readers, to another rendition of Rock the Charts, where we highlight the latest and greatest films in the Japanese box office. This week, we've got a couple of new films entering the charts and it looks like they're doing pretty well. Except for The Time Traveler's Wife, though.
I guess Japan doesn't take too well to sappy American romances?
#1: I Give My First Love to You. 1st week, pulling in $3.06 million.
#2: The Sun That Never Sets. 1st week, pulling in $2.73 million.
#3: Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor. 3rd week, pulling in $2.18 million.
#4: The Rebirth of Buddha. 2nd week, pulling in $1.03 million.
#5: Fast and the Furious 4. 3rd week, pulling in $773k.
#6: My Sister's Keeper. 3rd week, pulling in $636k.
#7: The Proposal. 2nd week, pulling in $413k.
#8: Samayou Yaiba. 3rd week, pulling in $340k.
#9: The Time Traveler's Wife. 1st week, pulling in $324k.
#10: The Final Destination. 2nd week, pulling in $316k.
I picked I Give My First Love to You because it seems like this is the go-to moneymaker story in Japan. Some sort of tale of first love mixed in with an inevitable tragedy, but everything turns out alright in the end (I hope). And y'know? It's really effective. And I don't think it's an area that's necessarily been exploited enough in US cinema recently...
Excuse me, I've got a screenplay to write.
