I've never bought a Newtype mag. I've read one before, and I thought it was freaking amazing, it's just that I don't buy Magazines. Ever.

Too many good things are dieing lately and I'm just as pissed as that pryo freak.

Yeah, PiQ was a huge disappointment. My anime club collected donations for a semester to renew, to find out six hours later that Newtype died. Our Sci Fi club can get their magazines, but we wanted our anime mag :(

Having been a huge fan of Newtype USA since I got my first issue in 2005, this was a huge disappointment. I dunno who the guy is in that video but I agree with his his review - Battlestar Galactica + Terminator + Avatar?! = no, just no.

If I wanted a magazine that branched all over the place with no real focus I'd get Play. If I wanted crappy magazine about gaming or sci-fi shows I'd get PC Gamer or Sci-fi channel magazine.

I'm definitely going to ask for a refund. Heck, you'll probably have more fun trying to translate Newtype Japan even not knowing a single word of Japanese than reading PiQ...

Seeing as it's only the first issue, I'll give them a little more time before I decide to drop it though.

Sorry, but Battlestar Galactica can stay the hell out of my anime mags. PiQ sounds like some pointless, culturally homogenized mishmash of genres.

ADV is trying to cut out the Nerd Factor(Otaku) from its' list of stuff to sell, by going the GQ route of rags for the up and coming click type of person on the Go!

A magazine without a Specific theme to attach itself to will die. I know that every magazine lives for that 5 Year benchmark. You know, the one Newtype crossed a few months ago? It's the fabled "Do or Die" that any magazine strives for in sucess, many fall off the racks never reaching the fifth year and those publishers usually goes under without drastic restructioning. For ADV to break that trend makes it a Trend-Setter! Celebrate the brash/ bold/ ..idiotic actions of this company!

Its the In Your Face to any up and coming works and you all should take note of it. To all you Sucker- subscribers, I'll say this.

You aint getting no refund unless the entire subscribing base unite, gets a lawyer, and demands refunds by going to court for breach of contract in said product.

I'm not trying to say Battlestar Galactica is by any means bad, but putting it together with this other stuff in such a wide spectrum is like putting Kenshin Himura in Half Life. In other words, they may both be great but they don't necessarily fit together.

Imagine Himura Kenshin trying to talk the aliens to take the enlightened path to peace, then being forced to knock them out and humiliate them so they submit.

Yeah Heero, you might be on to something. Throw in Yahiko instead of Alex, and Sanosuke in place of Dog. Modders your work is cut out for you. Also, Japanator IS better.

As for seriously making a mod, look up Garry's Mod if you haven't heard of it. It allows you to do just about anything you could want in the Half Life engine.

Lastly, back on track with the article, I have to say I stand somewhat corrected. After reading it more closely (I had barely skimmed my copy of the issue before posting my first response), I have to say a large portion of the original content in NTUSA is still there. There's still con reports, the writer who always uses the term "school-girl milky crisis" (forgot his name but I enjoy his articles), and it still gives some previews of newer shows to come.

Where it goes wrong however (at least in this issue) is that for one thing, having an article titled "Is Anime Dead?" is probably not smart to have in a magazine, especially since that title would be misleading to anyone who doesn't already know what it's talking about, and about half of the new columns seem to contradict the fact that this is largely an anime magazine and go on to shun anime and it's fans (and not in a constructive light either). Aside from those few confusing articles, it's rather well done.

It may not have the large artsy cool pages for the newest shows or a manga chapter, but strangely it's got a chapter or two of Crayon Shin chan at the end.
The main thing that bugs me personally and probably a few others (including the guy in the video) is it seems to stick to only anime series of the genres that holywood would classify as 'cool' or primarily action. Very little moe at all, and the only thing close in this issue is "Tweeny Witches" which imo isn't really at all. All I'm saying is I miss the large genre spectrum.
