We get it. They don't.

I'm tired of the questions. I heard the last one, the straw that broke the camel's back, yesterday. I didn't know that someone was watching me watch Sora no Otoshimono over my shoulder. Uguu~ I'm tired of explaining myself.

To vent, I'm going to log all of the stupid questions they ask me when they see me watching anime. If I missed any, let me know in the comments below.

Why are their eyes all scribbly?

Why are their eyes just dots now?

Why are their eyes sparkling?

Why are their eyes empty?

Why are the eyes so big?

Why are their heads so big?

Where are the noses?

What is that one sweatdrop/tear/etc...?

What's that mark on their head?

Why do they always show panties?

Is that allowed on TV there?

Why are their boobs so big?

Seriously, her boobs are way too big. That's just not natural.

Why did her boobs bounce for no reason?

Why are words coming out of their head/chest/crotch?

Why are her tear drops flying away? Sparkling?

Why is he on fire?

Is she a robot or something?

What are those things on her head?

Why is his nose bleeding?

Why is that nose blood spraying?

Did he get punched in the face or something when I wasn't looking?

Why is snot coming out of his nose?

Is that a snot bubble?

Why is he slithering like a snake?

Why did the art style just change?

Why did it change again?

Why is he so small all of the sudden?

Why does he have angel wings now?

Why do they look like little kids now?

What is that purple cloud?

Why is a ghost flying up from him?

Did he just turn into a little kid?

How old is that girl supposed to be?!?

Is underage sex allowed in Japan or something?

Are they all pedophiles?

Why did she just turn naked?

Why is she transforming?

Why is she spinning as stars are flying everywhere?

Why does she have fangs? Is she a vampire?

Why does she have a cat mouth?

Why is there a bubble/ball on their head?

Why are there bubbles/balls on top of that bubble/ball?

Why is there band-aids on that bubble/ball?

Why do they hold their pinky up?

Why did he hold his hand up?

Why are their faces red? Are they drunk?

Why are the trees pink?

Is this that "hen tie" stuff?

LOL. I get the same questions when a person sees mee watching anime. Some people really doesn't understand. But you can't blame them. I was tha same at the very first but with time i comepletely understood them. X333

I have never heard anyone ask me any of those questions either in person or online.

I don't know, I can understand if they are like "That's so stupid why are doing that?" but even though questions pop up a lot start to become repetitive and annoying, its not doing anyone good by not answering someone's question. Saying "They just don't understand" is just as bad, weren't you the same your first time? Walk in someone else's shoes once in a while ;)

I tend to get 'Isn't anime just all schoolgirls' a lot as well.

I get these questions while drawing as people look over my shoulder.

"why doesn't he have a nose?"
"why's his hand just a ball?"
"why did his mouth disappear?"
"how does is he talking without a mouth?"
"how come he has 4 arms now with lines between them"
"where did those arrows come from?"
"why isn't he dead?"

ok, the last two weren't real, but I wonder why no one asks those

Amazing post, so true. I've been asked a good number of these before.

The ones I get the most relate to your red faces: "Why is she blushing so much?" and "How dose she blush on top of blush?"

Most of my friends watch anime, so the only questions I get are:
"Awwww, what the hell is this?!"
and
"Are you seriously watching that crap?"

I can't help it, I like slice-of-life comedies. _ _

The only ones I get are "Why are their eyes so HUUGE? I mean, that's like half their facial area.", and "Whoa, dude, wtf are you watching?".

The latter one is usually a result of Murphy's law, where I could be watching anything from the first episode of Railgun and it just so happens to be the bathroom scene, or it could be KnK3 right in the middle of the 15 second long rape scene, etc. etc.

Also, you've got no excuse if you're watching Sora no Otoshimono around anyone... I mean, that's just ASKING for snark comments.

I've got a better question: Why is it when abnormal stuff happens in American cartoons, everyone is alright w/ it happeneing but when it happens in anime, they make a big deal out of it?

Also, for some reason, people make a big deal of the hair (style, color, length, etc.).

- Why are they talking about food again? (Lucky Star)
- What the hell just happened? (All of FLCL)

There are many others on certain shows, but I'm lazy.

I got the same questions from my mum too. I ended up telling her to just watch until it makes sense. Oddly, mum is a huge fan now and is holding a bunch of my Vampire Knight manga hostage...

The only funnier thing than some of these stupid questions is that the honest-to-god answer to about two in ten is "I have no idea, and neither does the mangaka probably."

The closest thing I got to questions like this was one time when my dad was watching me play Metal Slug X. He commented that it was stupid how I was shooting at a giant tank while riding a camel.

I rarely get these questions, mostly because I keep my fandom to myself. I have been asked the difference between anime and manga. And my mom doesn't ask about it, but she does comment on and find it amusing that their eyes are so big and that they talk fast. Otherwise, I sometimes get little comments from people who see my manga collection along the lines of "I guess you like Japanese anime"...or "I think you were Korean in another life" (yea, "Korean" lol)

One time my friend was watching me watch Eureka 7, and her only remark was "...Why are the explosions pink?"
Also, I get a lot of "Anime? Isnt that cartoon stuff for kids?" and my personal favorite "What language are they speaking? Spanish?"

I havent had any of these happen to me yet. I have had comments from those who knew i watched it and asked"whats with that stuff ? Its all the same isnt it?" and i usualy go into length about how ya need to find the dimonds in the rough just like any other tv/movie series.

Also Papasan i am honored that you're useing my pumkin as an avatar.I feel like my otaku points just amped up XD

It's really hard to explain why it makes sense for a character to bleed from the nose when stuff gets ecchi, but other questions just boggle the mind. I'm particularly surprised when people complain about realism in anime. As far as I can see, western cartoons are generally LESS realistic in every possible way; it's "just a cartoon", after all. But then in most people's minds anime apparently don't count as cartoons, so it's a problem whenever characters don't have the same hair colour as their creators.

Anyway, I don't get caught watching anime much, so I don't usually have to answer these questions.

At first I was a bit like that(with the nosebleeds, characters falling down on their sides or the droplets on their heads), but after watching a few series I adapted and now I appreciate those things. What I hate are people who think all animes are kid stuff and refuse to watch any in case they could be proved wrong.

Also what I never got are people who don't understand the character designs when they watch American cartoons which are often less detailed, as PBz0r said.

Sometimes I get asked why I have models of Gundams. I dont want to tell them that Im using them as design guidelines for my own killing machines.

I have to say I had similar questions in my head when i first ran into situations in anime. They almost immediately just turn to 'lolwut' moments which is why i love anime so much. So much weird random crap.

Well to be honest, I think we all had some of those questions in our heads when we first got into anime. I know for a fact that things like nosebleeds, sweatdrops, and changing from normal to chibi in anime were all extremely weird to me.

Also, you try explaining to someone how a robot detached from a giant robot that just jumped out of another giant robot's mouth that just jumped out of another giant robot's mouth that just jumped out of another REALLY GIANT robot's mouth. Sometimes, "I have no f*cking clue" is the best answer to these questions.

If I say to someone "I watch Japanese anime" they immediately say "you watch cartoon porn?"

Actual conversation:

Him: "Why do you watch these cartoons all day?"

Me: "You know how you get up early on Sunday and your ass doesn't leave the couch during football season? This stuff is my Sunday"

Him: "Oh. But it's all porn and stuff right?"

Me: "Again, Football. Do I need to explain the whole mechanics of hiking the ball to the QB again?"

Him: "No... but football rules."

I then spammed Gurren Lagann quotes at full volume until he left.

The closest thing to these questions that I have encountered is: "How do you tell the difference between the guys and the girls?"

I had no good answer other than: "Keep watching."

I've never really been asked these questions about anime but I have been asked a bunch of questions about manga. Such as "Why are you reading that book backwards?"

Best answer i give is "watch the begging" or " its a series" then they just sit and see it with me for a bit then leave, then come back and say" can we see that fight seen again". lol

I very rarely watch anime with other people about. To be honest though, I didn't question it when I first started watching. I just accepted it to be a crazy and completely bonkers form of media.

I do get asked loads about reading manga backwards, though. And... "why is it in black and white?"

Often bafflingly followed by another question such as, "why are they showing so much of her boobs?"

The people who ask these questions are, as often as not, just trying to 'wind you up'. They may not get it, but this isn't because they can't get it. It's because they don't care (I mean, it's pretty intuitive) and they just want to tease you about it.

'doesn't mean they're bad people; it's just not their thing.

/but most of 'em are bad people. Cut 'em off.
