Super Robot Wars UX's trailer features vocaloid action

3:00 PM on 12.12.2012

Oh wow, I never thought that I would live to see the day that a vocaloid would make an appearance in the Super Robot Wars series. Courtesy of Sega, Miku will be piloting her version of the Fei-Yen that features her signature leek and dance moves in Super Robot Wars UX for the 3DS. This will also be the first game to feature a unit from a visual novel game, since Demonbane is making its debut to the franchise.

Another nice aspect is that we are getting more robots from shows that are two years old or less, since they tend to come in small numbers. With Heroman, Mazinkaiser SLK, Fafner: Heaven and Earth, SD Gundam Sangokushi: Brave Battle Warriors, and the Gundam 00: Awakening of the Trailblazer joining in, it's safe to say that SRW is going to pump out more newer newcomers than usual.

Fans of Tomino can look forward to The Wings of Rean making it's first appearance, along with the return of Aura Battler Dunbine, who has been absent from the franchise for quite awhile. Ninja Senshi Tobikage will be returning as well, and you can look forward to another appearances by Macross Frontier: Sayonara no Tsubasa and Fafner. However, you can expect a few mediocre shows to make a return, such as the ever so popular Gundam Seed Destiny, Dancougar Nova, and Linebarrels of Iron

Even though SRW UX has a few interesting contenders, the visuals don't live up to the ones found in the Super Robot Wars Z series. In fact, they feel like a step down from anything we've seen on the PSP and PS2, since it looks more like a higher resolution of the Super Robot Wars games on the DS. I understand that they might be trying to go with their own style to set it apart from the ones on the Sony systems, but it feels like they are not taking full advantage of the 3DS's graphical capabilities. Hopefully, the animations and the 3D features will make up for the inferior visuals on the 3DS. Due to Nintendo's region lock on the handheld, this will be another title that most importers will have to miss out on. But hey, at least we'll be able to import the superior 2nd Super Robot Wars OG for the PS3, or whatever new title that comes out for the PS3 or the PS Vita. If you have found a way to play imported games on your 3DS, Super Robot Wars UX will be available for 7,140 yen on March 14, 2013.
