SZS Advertisiments
by Ben Huber, 08/29/2009

So now I'm deciding to tackle magazine ads. As may be obvious, I'm taking the route of focusing each ad on a different girl in Itoshiki-sensei's class. The first one above is Ai Kaga. I thought I'd focus on the fact that each student has an obvious quirk (pretty understandable). The main quote being "Omigosh! I'm so sorry!" The impact on the eye is going to be the bright colors, so having a quote that defines the character as the focus is important.

Some of the quotes (like the one here) are fairly abridged versions of what actually is said in the series. So to be honest, it's really tough to get the full meaning in as few words as possible. Also of note: my paragraphs about the characters were made up on the spot, so please forgive any errors.

Next up: Kafuka-chan! I really wanted to fit the hanging/getting taller joke in the ad, so I hope this abridged version makes sense (tell me if it doesn't). Also, I'm not sure about purple shades for Kafuka -- I'm pretty sure it works, but I wasn't 100% sure when I made it. (I also just realized I made a spelling mistake in the paragraph. "Fafuka," lol)

In a play to help enforce Chiri's obsessive-compulsive orderliness character, I made everything in the ad horizontal and even. It's totally "proper," balanced on both sides (the block of text is balanced by the detail of Chiri and the title on the left).

I hope this is as fun or interesting to you as it is to me. I'm really enjoying deconstructing SZS and creating art around it. Also, although this would never happen, I began thinking about if it would be possible to create names for the students that were plays on words in English as well. Such as Ai Kaga being Paula Gee (apology). Or something of the like. This is almost the way Phoenix Wright was localized, except from what I understand they often created whole new plays on words instead of always trying to translate the original ones.

If you stuck through this whole post until now, here, have a medal, soldier.
