Besides Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, Japan has one other RPG mega-franchise, and that's Namco Bandai's Tales series. I have I have yet to actually play a post-PS1 entry of the series, though I like the franchise by default since they often involve character designs by Ah! My Goddess' Kosuke Fujishima, who was apparently out of his mind when he created protagonist Luke's midriff-eriffic outfit.
That said, folks who remember Tales of the Abyss as a PS2 title might think this "Special Fan Disc" offering might be about three years late, since the game launched in 2005. However, the release makes more sense when viewed in light of Abyss' TV series adaptation, whose broadcast finished up in March '09.
Alongside a special round-table discussion looking back at the series and the game, the disc will come with several animated "skits." In the game, skits were essentially voiced, character-building cutscenes sans cinematography, with animated heads talking to each other from out of arranged boxes, like in the intro to The Brady Bunch.
Which begs the question: Are these skits for the Fan Disc going to be the same talking-heads-thing, or some more elaborate special-episode OVA? I'm sure as hell hoping for the latter, though having the former would at least save me from staring at Luke's abs. Seriously, what was Fujishima thinking?
