The next mothership title in Namco Bandai's popular Tales of franchise has been revealed to be Tales of Xillia 2 for the PS3. Taking place a year after the conclusion of the orignal game, ToX2 features a brand new main character. Ludgar looks to be a bit older than the average Tales main character, which gives me hope that he'll be more of a Yuri rather than a Luke. While many were thinking that the new game's tagline, destroying the world for a girl, was hinting at a more romantically inclined Tales, it turns out that the heroine is a little girl named Elle. Expect something more along the lines of a big brother/little sister relationship.
Additionally, ToX2 will feature points at which you'll be able to have Ludgar make decisions that effect the flow of events using the L1 and R1 buttons. At first glance, it looks like the combat system will be seeing some big changes this time around, featuring a system called 'weapon shift' that allows Ludgar to change weapons in the middle of his attacks. I still haven't finished ToX yet, but one of the issues I have with it is that the battle system doesn't hold up next to Tales of Graces amazing combat. It's fun, but it leaves something to be desired.
Ayumi Hamasaki and Ufotable are both back again to handle the opening theme and animated scenes respectively. During the presentation, the staff stressed that they're aiming for a winter 2012 release but they're not sure yet. The finalized release date will be announced on June 27th. My fingers are crossed for a December window.
I don't know about you folks, but I'm really digging Ludgar's character design. He looks like he could be a police officer or maybe even a reporter, which would be an interesting variation from your typically young Tales protagonists. I'm also incredibly fond of the steampunk world, so I'm really hoping this fixes some of the issues I've been having with ToX.
