This war began with an interview with Arthur Smith, the president of GDH (Gonzo) international in which he talked about the state of the industry. As you might of guessed, it wasn’t a happy discussion, because the hot topic for this interview was piracy. Smith blamed the fans in this interview for the industry’s decline because of their evil creations known as fansubs.
“ 9. How much is your company affected by fansubbing and illegal downloading?
- Significantly.”
Yes, we have all heard this song and dance before, it was nothing new. But then came Justin Sevakis, a writer at Anime News Network, who wrote an open letter to the industry about this very issue itself. Instead of blaming the fans for this decrease in profit, he blamed the industry itself. Stating that if you want fans to stop watching fansubs, then give them a way to watch new anime for free.
“Before legal action will be effective, fansubs must be replaced. THERE HAS TO BE A LEGAL, INEXPENSIVE WAY TO WATCH NEW ANIME IN ENGLISH. Not necessarily own, but at least watch.”
Both sides have launched attacks against one another, and this will surly turn a lot uglier before any solution will become available. I have to agree with Justin, things need to change. Yes it is horrible that people have been taking the industry’s livelihood by stealing its only product; but because of this product’s age, it has become custom. In our minds, It’s either free, or we will find some way of getting it for free.
However, that is only for watching a series; if I want to collect it I would be more than happy to relinquish some of my money in order for that to happen. Either way, this seems to be a far off dream. Remember American anime industry, with fansubs you are no longer needed, if you want us to use you then give us a reason to.
