The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya has been licensed photo

It's happened.  Bandai Entertainment has acquired the rights to the movie The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.

The movie takes place after season two of the series, and will be shown subtitled by VIZ Cinema (in other words, it'll be showing in San Francisco) beginning in May. And for those of you who live in Hawaii, Haruhi's supposed to be playing there in June for the SPOTLIGHT ASIA FILMS Program.  More details on that have yet to be released.

For those of us who don't live in San Francisco or Hawaii, or don't earn enough money for trips (the sadness of a freelance writer's income), there'll be the DVD, which will also have an English track.  A release date hasn't been announced for that yet, but I'm sure the Haruhi fans at Japanator will keep you posted as we learn more.

Awesome. I'll wait for the DVD and not bother getting it through "other means".
While it's good news that it's been acquired, this is an Abysmal release attempt already. Hawaii and one theater in San Fransisco is not a proper release.

Fans of Bandai Entertainment will probably recall watching the Eureka Seven movie in theaters via Fathom Events, and if you're theater was like mine, Haruhi coming up on a bumper before the movie brought a round of applause.

So we ALL know it's possible for them to release this movie nationwide. Why don't they? Why did they forsake Evangelion to the icy north of Canada and stinky arthouse cinemas? WHY does Death Note, Bleach, and Eureka Seven get proper theatrical events, but everything else gets relegated to obscurity?

A DVD release is great, but anyone with a eye for cinematography watching these Anime Movie DVDs will know that the Imagery, Music, Tone, and Grandeur of the film will always be subpar on anything less than the Silver Screen it was designed for.

Bandai Entertainment, I IMPLORE you, as a paying customer, to do the right thing and get together with Fathom Events and get this film up to the people who want to see it as soon as possible. You KNOW this film is going to sell DVDs, and you KNOW at least half would also buy tickets to see it on the big screen in a heartbeat in addition to buying the DVDs and Blu-Rays. You can double the investment, or at least try too.

C'mon Bandai. Treat a Movie right. Haruhi would NEVER settle for anything less than her movie being seen in Theaters everywhere!
Fail, they won't make the movie even half of what it should be.
This movie was really, really good. They need to have it be in -alot- more theaters than this.
I'm glad that someone picked up this masterpiece so quickly! Too bad I won't be able to watch it in theaters though...
all i want is to see a non-camrip sub of this. my hopes of this dream being achieved sooner just got higher
Any other means other than that suck ass camera rip out there would be wonderful.
I just hope it's as good as the book was. And please, please be on Blu-Ray. That would make me VERY happy.
double phail, limited release AND sub only! >.
@Treiz: I wouldn't call it fail for subs since it is coming out so fast in some theaters.
If I can make it to the San Francisco showing with no schedule conflicts, I am so down for that. Although, as as someone who went to see the one-time event showing of the Eureka Seven movie in the theater and think that there's no way a Haruhi movie would do LESS successfully than that, I think Viz would be passing up a big opportunity in not doing a bit wider of a limited engagement.
I'd of liked to see this in theatre, but it isn't worth a three hour drive and a cross of the border to see it. Ah well, I'll hold out for a Blu-Ray release soon regardless.
Why does the west coast get everything? I will get it anyway. Somehow. Interwebs.
I bet this wouldn't have happened without the infamous camrip circulating around the internet.
Not worldwide? D-;
@Rewarp
I so second that . Pweez =(
@EpcotServo I concur. I frequent the Fathom Events website maybe twice a month now hanging onto the small sliver of hope that I have that they'll get to manage a proper showing of an anime movie.
If the dates don't hinder me, I'm so going to San Francisco!
This is why I moved to San Francisco.
At least we'll get to see this in better quality, very soon. :)
