The sincerest form of flattery? Chinese anime traces 5cm per Second

The sincerest form of flattery? Chinese anime traces 5cm per Second photo

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that were true, it seems that China is absolutely infatuated with Makoto Shinkai's 5 Centimeters Per Second: A chain of short stories about their distance.

According to Gigazine, the Chinese film Window to the Heart has been caught tracing large portions of the Japanese production. The film itself was created by a Chinese company and co-produced by the Communist Party propaganda office. We don't have enough details to see if 5cm's story has also been pirated, but the movie is being billed as a "moral anime," with more episodes planned for release on TV and in theaters.

I'm of the opinion that tracing and imitation are an important step towards the creation of greater original content. Many complaints that are being leveled at the Chinese today were once aimed at the Japanese back during the post-war economic boom. That said, the level of mimicry on display here is quite amazing.

Hit the jump for comparison screenshots. The Japanese original is above, with the Chinese version below. What do you think?

I guess a Chinese dub wasn't enough.
Tracing may be a /step/ towards original content, but tracing and using it as one's own commercial work is just cheap, in my opinion.
tracing isnt even what most of these are. most of them are the actual scenes with things edited out/in or with effects on em. lazy
Tracing or not, there is no way to justify this. Typical sh*t that comes out of the CPC office. Between this and the Chinese Youth League's xenophobic WWII game, they're incredibly disappointing to me lately in the field of alternative forms of entertainment.
I'm not going to lie. 5cm Per Second was the 1st anime (hell, perhaps the 1st MOVIE) that made me cry. It was so freakin' emotional (& so was Makoto Shinkai's other work, Voices of a Distant Star, which also made me cry).
well 5cm didnt make me cry but i did enjoy it.

"..created by a Chinese company and co-produced by the COMMUNIST Party propaganda office."

co-produced by the what?? why would the be interested in a story about growing up?
sorry to say it, but this ripoff is of a very sad quality. If you're going to rip it off, at least copy the incredible quality. China + originality = 6 billion simultaneous gasps of shock
I smell international suit and war coming.
Isn't inferior quality knockoffs China's MO?
LOLCHINA
That's effed up. I think I was doing that when I first started watching Anime and trying to Animate myself but damnnnn China. I hope someone stops that cheap crap from being produced. "A good artist copies, a great artist steals". This makes me sad in the pants. =(
Oh well, if you are going to rip someone off, at least rip off the best one out there.
I can understand a bit off ripping off but just to remake it as a copy is silly. I'm sure there are plenty of Chinese writers and animators out there that could do a original work. Give them a chance..................... !
Wow, hardcore copying at its finest!
So is EVERYTHING in China stolen/pirated? The country is already the world leader in software/movie piracy.... now they're dabbling in IP theft even more than usual.

Anyone remember the hilarious Chinese Harry Potter knock-off?
HAHAHAHA, suing China? Seriously? Not even we sue China, and we're the U.S.. The only real way they could even get something close to compensation is to go to the W.T.O. and present the evidence of a string of anime copyright violations in hopes of getting it removed or some money back. Most likely.... nothing will be fixed. I mean, they even ripped off mickey mouse. Mickey Mouse. They know no bounds, with such a ridiculous amount of windows ripoff that microsoft had a problem with the Chinese government when they tried to make computers display a blackscreen when the OS detected was pirated.
Damn, this is bootlegging to another level.
Well, didn't Japan stole China's kanjis, religion and pretty much all of their traditional culture?

KA-CHING!
WOW CHINA. WOW. Just wow. I love you guys.
Why do they get to have awesome singers come to Singapore again? :C
*sigh* What can I say about the Chinese trying to imitate anime. Well, let me start off by saying I am pissed! It's not enough that Americans are trying to rip off anime, and make crappy cartoon anime imitations like Ben 10, Avatar, Chaotics, and the list goes on. It seems that China has gotten into the game of doing the same.

Not only that but they have a Cartoon that is a rip off of Pokemon AND Bleach. China has been the main criminal of ripping off anime in a, Buffet all you can eat way of thinking. China is not only the criminal of this But also Korea. Korea has a cartoon that is like Dragon Ball Z. PLUS they used scenes from Dragon Ball Z and other animes as well.

Now to end my comment I'd like to say something to the world. BE ORIGINAL DAMNIT!! Stop ripping of anime and create your own way of telling storys. I know cartoons are bad but, if you REALLY want to make an anime or manga GO TO JAPAN!!!!! It isn't THAT hard to get a ticket, go to a manga publisher and show them one of your works and discuss about you being able to be a published mangaka working for them.

And that is the end of my Rant. If we REALLY want the anime and manga industry to get better we need to stop the creations of imitations.
