Here's a video of the top 50 manga titles, according to Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs (or so says Japan Probe). I'm assuming this list concerns series in the past year or so, as titles like Mushishi, NANA, and Yotsubato! appear on the list.
My problem with the list is that the ordering seems a little random as to what's popular, with some titles seeming like they should be higher than they are (assuming these are being ranked by sales numbers), while some older titles are missing or are in odd spots. I mean, One Piece is on there, while Naruto and Bleach are left out (no offense, Len).
So, I'd like to know how exactly this list got determined. Japan, I want answers! For those of you who can't watch, the list is located after the jump. It's #1 first, so be prepared for spoilers!

Well, i love the One Piece love, but how the hell did JoJo make it to the number 2 spot? I love the manga, but no number 2 spot does it deserve. Not to mention One Piece > FMA!
Hi, I'm a Japanese guy living in Tokyo.
These are not being ranked by sales numbers.
They are based on a questionnaire carried out last summer by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs.
They say 78,980 general public and media art professionals answered through web poll and mail-in poll.
Further info.

did mixxzine.....err...tokyopop ever finish parasyte?
I was basing most post on the video's description:
"文化庁による名作マンガTOP50"
But since kotorix has provided the link to the actual survey and information on its methods, it's pretty clear why Naruto didn't make the list: a internet/mail survey wouldn't include a lot of elementary school-aged voters.
@James: Oh snap, son. :D
Anyway, not saying I agree with the list, but YuYu getting love = me happy.
It seems pretty obvious to me that this list is NOT based on sales - or at least, not entirely. If it was, Nana and Death Note would probably be higher, and Mushishi would be lower. And as much as I love the manga, Emma would probably not be on the list.
I don't doubt for a second though that what is popular didn't affect what was on the list. But on Naruto and Bleach, as I understand it sales are dropping dramatically for both in Japan - people seem to be getting tired of 'em.
What the hell is this music, it sounds like Japanese Iron Maiden lol.
Seems like a bit of a random list to be honest. Jojo's bizarre adventure is good (especially part 3, but uh those horrible muscles), I haven't actually read Slam Dunk (not a fan of sports animes), but it seems to have most of the favourites. Where the hell is Hikaru no Go (which came pretty high in one of the recent anime top 50s) and Rurouni Kenshin though, I'm surprised they didn't make it.
Some of the choices seem iffy, but most make sense since they seem to all be manga that have made a lasting impression. Jojo has been around since the 80s and is still going and still popular, so to see it at number 2 is no surprise at all.
Good going for Naoki Urasawa. 4 of his series are up there.
0_0 no GTO, no ARMS, no Battle Royal(... bah this one is not really surprising..
)..... whoa not even evangelion.... what going on with you japan ... you were cool before...
... unless I missread something
@Kaikara: Music by Jam Project
I just hope that somebody would translate Ushio and Tora
Some choices are a bit iffy, but most make sense, since they all seem to be manga that have made a large long lasting impression. Jojo has been around since the 80s and is still going and still popular. To see it at number 2 makes perfect sense.
Also, good going Naoki Urasawa. 4 of his series are up there.
What !? No Hajime no Ippo =/ ?
Seeing Hokuto no Ken on the list makes me smile. I guess it is all the renewed interest from the new movies and video games. Glad to see it get some love from Japan.
i wouldnt doubt it!
