A brilliant Awakening

While writing these awards posts, I came to the realization that 2013 has been a pretty big year all around. It's been fantastic year for most of the media I consume, especially video games (my favorite!) I'm first and foremost a video game writer and I make it my business to keep up with the latest and greatest titles so I can report back with my thoughts. I played more games than I can keep track of this year, but considering we chose to nominate games that appeal to the Japanator audience only, that made things a little easier for me. I cast my vote, but we could only go with one game to rule 2013.

Which games did we nominate? Let's take a look:

  • Shin Megami Tensei IV
  • Fire Emblem Awakening
  • Final Fantasy XIV
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies

Which one was a winner winner, chicken dinner? It could only have been...

Fire Emblem Awakening

One of the most exciting strategy RPGs of the year takes home the gold! Fire Emblem Awakening is a frequent favorite on many a top games of 2013 list, and for good reason. It's welcoming to players of all skill levels, eschewing previously austere convention for a delightful mixture of game modes that appeal to casual and hardcore players. It also combined excellent localization with a cast of characters we quickly fell hard for, in and out of battle. Marriage, friendship, and a deep customization system? You bet your sweet bippy! Fire Emblem Awakening knocked our socks off, and if you haven't yet picked up a copy, now would be a great time to do so!

Congratulations, as usual, to the rest of our nominees! And alas, poor MegaTen! I see 2014 being the year of Persona!
