In college, I had a judo instructor who was almost as ripped as this guy. What blew me away was that the man had muscles in his back that I didn't even know existed. It was a pretty disturbing sight though. I mean, even if he was totally ripped, it was still old wrinkly skin.
This ji-san, however, is completely different. Toned and sculpted like hardened clay, the 74 year old Tsutomu Tosuka recently walked away as the senior champion of the Japan Masters Bodybuilding Championships which took place over the weekend.
Now, of course he was competiting against other seniors, but what impressed me was that he didn't even start body building until he was 40. A friend apparently introduced him to the sport and he never looked back since. That's a real late start, so that should give the rest of us hope in case we decide to bulk up--right?
Considering that the majority of Japan's population is heading into their twilight years, maybe they should start looking to people like Tosuka-san as an example of how to live those years with some grace.
