Because your day didn't have enough win in it, I bring you the latest in Gurren Lagann movie goodness. Even though its a floor video from the ongoing Tokyo International Anime Fair, that won't stop me from looping, full screening, and fapping squinting at this video.
While littered with incomprehensible gibberish and background noise, the sweetly familiar sounds of the GL soundtrack can be heard throughout the entire affair. Believe in the me, who believes in this movie, for it shall be happiness incarnate. Some screens old, some scenes new, pretty much the entire cast of the show made appearances, notably young Simon (with shadowy images of the old Simon), and a Lord Genome with a body. Tipster extreme, Nmaster, states that Gainax is likely working on a second project, which will be more of a cut-up retelling of the original story. While this would explain many of the older sequences, and leave more room for my redesigned loves, I can neither confirm or deny his moonrune interpretations.
What say ye, people of Japanator, fap worthy, or was the series enough of a good thing?
I'm honestly kind of worried. The series was so amazing it'd be a shame if the movie messed it up, but on the other hand if they do manage to pull it off real well, it could be epic. It's all dependent upon how well it really turns out to be as to whether this could be justified or not...
So the "2nd project" info apparently came from Megami Magazine, and was translated by 2chan (Google translate moonrunes were involved). A user on AnimeSuki also provided some translation...
-The storyline will be completely different, with only theme similarities.
-The characters will remain with their core mostly untouched but some of them will play much smaller roles. They're focusing on the lead characters for development.
-Nia will have the only prominent female role in the film, she will be the main heroine. Yoko and the three sisters will be more on the line of secondary characters.
-Imaishi wants to give it a different mood/direction style more fitting of a film while still conveying the same excitement
-All new soundtrack/animation
-There's going to be more than one movie, but it be like a straight summary either. "If we're going to tell a story, it will be told in battle. While throwing in new cuts, we plan on making it a work that has the surging hotness that you felt watching the TV version at the forefront."
-Because the dialogue won't match up if they're doing a reconstruction, all of the dialogue will be newly recorded.
-They would like to create more new works after the movie. They have many stories from the seven years after Lord Genome was defeated. If the movie is a hit, the possibility of them making more will become higher.
-They're creating several new animated works, a little of which will be shown at the Anime Fair. The staff will differ for each one. Each one will be short, but have the staff's hot feelings packed in. They're still unsure when they'll be able to get these to the fans.
Then came the anime fair, for which we got these reports...
Movie:
-Formal name is "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Crimson Volume" (天元突破グレンラガン紅蓮編)
-This movie is Part 1
-The dubbing will all be newly recorded
-There will be new scenes
-It will open in theaters on September 6, 2008
-The theme song will be by Shouko Nakagawa again
"Secret project":
-The promo for the new Gurren Lagann production is 3-minute anime shorts similar to AniKuri
Right now, 6 different ones by Imaishi, Ootsuka, Tsurumaki, Sushio, Yoshinari, and Saeki are in production, and there are plans to make more.
-The new animation was labeled as Gurren Lagann music clips
-Set to Iwasaki Taku's music, it looks like each animator is doing what they want with their own individual styles in the open
Amemiya is doing To hell with this Gattai!, Yoshinari did Burn up, all of you!
Most important tidbit:
"Lazengann slicing through the face of the Anti-Spiral warship looked cool."
The interwebz is a good source for info. xP
But if ya look through all those notes, I'm starting to get a bit nervous.
Yoko as a secondary character? Bah.
"Imaishi wants to give it a different mood/direction style "
But but but... it better not be that much different. The reason I really loved the series was because of how ridiculously awesome it was told and how much can ya change it without pissing off the fans?
"They have many stories from the seven years after Lord Genome was defeated. If the movie is a hit, the possibility of them making more will become higher. "
I love how they want to milk the series as much as they want. Not that I'm complaining; more love for Gurren Lagann. ;) But this can lead to weird filler-like things and that may not be so cool.
I just hope this movie is good... can't deal with their other future projects for it until there is more to judge.
Yoko could never EVARRR be a secondary character. I call bullshits on that. Also the animation (from what I can decern from the blurry youtubeness) looks pretty top notch. I expect good things.
Trailer was pretty good though..
