When disaster strikes, people react in all sorts of different ways. That's something I've learned from Haruki Murakami's Underground, which I'll be talking about later on in the week. And so here we have Bones' latest project, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, a series that will be airing in July, once Eden of the East is over.
As the title implies, the series will take place in Tokyo, after the city is rocked by a magnitude 8.0 earthquake, and will follow a couple of children and a delivery woman as they try to navigate the aftermath of the whole thing, and not get swallowed up in what's going on.
Take a bit of Grave of the Fireflies, mix in Murakami's Underground, and you get what I can only imagine 8.0 will be like -- watching different people suffer through things, with a lot of commentary on how the Japanese react to these sorts of situations. I don't know how biting their commentary will be, but I hope for some real insights here.
Personally, if I were suddenly in a ruined city, I know I'd have no choice but to really work towards setting up a shelter or some sort of organized group working to help people get fresh water/food. I know there's the temptation to just work to keep yourself and your family alive, but I can't ignore the greater need in a time of crisis.
