I think I have to give it to Tomino even though I like much of Go Nagai works all because Tomino let us have real emotion with our giant robots. But I will thank them both for their works have inspired a new generation that has given GURREN LAGANN!!!
Going strictly by the number of shows in my collection with their names on them, Tomino wins by 7 shows.
Gotta give it up to both these guys, but since I'm a little more partial to the super robots I'm gonna pick Go Nagai.
I love Gundam shows, but in my opinion Tomino did not do the best part of Gundam ( I personally love the UC OVAs the best ). And the other shows, like Brain Powered and Overman King Gainer, I have mixed feelings. But Go Nagai, the inspiration/creator for Getter Robo, Steel Jeeg, and New Cutey Honey has to get my vote.
*looks up at most people's votes so far*
You guys have never made me so happy.
As an engineer, as someone who's taken the name of the main character from a spinoff of his original creations, as a fan of authors and creators who break boundaries and make you actually think about what you're seeing, and as a concerned fan who thinks the bastards at sunrise are marring his original intent with bullshit like Seed and 00, I vote Yoshiyuki Tomino.
Tomino was one of the first author's to make a series with combat that made you really wonder, who's REALLY the bad guy? Who's really in the moral wrong? While Go Nagai was busy breaking all the laws of physics, Tomino was coming up with feasible ideas and concepts that could bring some light of a plausible reality to his creations.
Besides, the guy helped make the Overman King Gainer opening....that alone should give him huge street cred.

In the Pantheon of the gods of anime/manga, Go Nagai is sitting right above Tomino. As much as I love Tomino's mecha shows, you gotta go with the man who started it all. Prior to Nagai, the main character in a mecha show didn't actually pilot the machine, they used remote control or voice commands to make the robot fight. He also came up with the concept of mecha that combined (Getter Robo). One of my first anime that I watched as a child was Voltron. Voltron damn it! Without Getter Robo there would be no Voltron. I weep thinking of that:( Mecha aside, Cutey Honey was the first magical girl. Again without Cutey Honey, could there be a Sailor Moon? Where would the childhoods of so many otaku be without that show? I think people owe it to their childhoods to vote for Go Nagai. I know I do.
Go Nagai FTW!
Go Nagai FTW!
@TessR: ....Gundam Wing wasn't written, produced, or directed by Tomino. And there's no way Cutie Honey would beat Char in an awesome poll.
I'd usually vote for the original (which is Nagai in my opinion though apparently Tomino is older), and I'm not even a fan of Gundam, but I definitely prefer Real Robots. Let's say it like this: Gurren Lagann was inspired by Nagai, whereas Evangelion was inspired by Tomino. My pick is in my avatar.
Oh, and I hate Magical Girls.
Oh, and I hate Magical Girls.
I'm also more familiar with Tomino as I have not seen most of Nagai's works, though I have heard of him. Still, I guess Tomino gets my vote. I'm purely going with what they've created rather than what they've inspired though.
When I was a little guy living in Puerto Rico back in the 80s, I grew up watching Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, and Steel JEEG (dubbed in Spanish) so I vote Go Nagai all the way.
I used to be a big fan of "Gundam" and "Heavy Metal L-Gaim" but Tomino let me down with "Turn A Gundam" and for that I will never forgive him.

Gotta go with Tomino. The only Gundam series I think is complete shit besides Victory is SEED. I've been enjoying 00 even with all the shitty comments it's getting. It's a great story, and they definitely made some really good commentary on the world as it stands today.
There is always MORE to a story than just the gundam design or the mech battles. In my opinion the gundam genre has always told a better story than the super robot genre.

tomino, he left a lasting impression on the mech genre in america that can be felt in almost every form of media.
Going by their work...Tomino is known mostly for Gundam and several other robot shows. On the other hand, Nagai has some memorable robots as well as several well known non-robot franchises(Cutie Honey, Devilman)..so I'd say Nagai definitely has more range and variety as a creator. BUT nothing he's created is as big of an anime icon as Gundam.
So my vote goes to Tomino.
So my vote goes to Tomino.
wow, this is a tough one. It's like asking 'who's a more iconic figure: Luke Skywalker or James T. Kirk?'. On another note, I can't wait for the Star Trek prequel to come out. Wicked cool trailers.
Aw man, you're making me choose between two of the greatest mecha titans in the world? This is going to be a tough one.
Tomino made Gundam. Simply enough, that's hard to beat. I doubt the mecha genre itself would even be significant in anime culture if it weren't for Gundam.
...but Nagai created the very essence of the people-piloting-the-mech-itself-instead-of-it-being-semi-sentient-or-being-commanded-by-voice genre. That, and without Nagai, we probably wouldn't have Gurren Lagann! D:
Which in turn makes this a battle between my childhood (Gundam) and my present-day fandom (Gurren "badass motherf*cker" Lagann).
Oh what the hell, since I seem to be in the nostalgic mood, what with my support of Steven Blum last week, I'll cave-in and vote for Tomino. Without that guy, the mecha genre itself may not have even made it to America. And without giant robots, I may not have even become an anime fan.

Man, what a tough call for me to make. I'm gonna have to give this one to Go Nagai since he is the godfather of everything mecha. Of course, Tomino can manifest my Ide any time of the week.
Well there is one thing we haven't factored for: both may be gods of the mecha genre, but which has had full scale models made of his works? :D
Tough one to answer. On the basis of their actual works, Tomino - I never really enjoyed Nagai that much. On the basis of influence, Nagai. To my mind, nobody's succeeded in doing Tomino half as well as Tomino himself - they've either copied his formula (Evangelion is basically Ideon on earth, come on, and IMO, Ideon had a lot more meat to it) or they've taken it in directions that've made it lose what made it remarkable in the first place (Gundam SEED, Destiny, 00).
On the balance, I'd have to say Nagai.

As much as I love Gundam, and I'm a total Gundam whore, I have to go with Go Nagai, based solely on Getter Robo. I love a high tech mech that fights using axes and a pilot that's so hot-blooded he'd kick God in the face.
