But based on what I've seen so far...

Joker regularly battles... => a ninja/bat/detective
Johan regularly battles... => a bum-like ex-neurosurgeon who has trouble firing a gun

I can't tell exactly what Johan is aiming at yet, so that makes the decision difficult, but Joker is certifiably insane, a mass-murderer, and has all of his wacky toys, so he gets my vote. ^^

I guess Johan since I just can't see him getting beat around like the Joker was.

Sadly, I haven't read much of Monster. However, the fact that DC villains tell stories of the Joker as their scary stories has to count for something.

As for this battle, I'd say The Joker. He's so unbelievably ingenious when it comes to his crimes and how he goes about them that I think Johan would have a hard time dealing with it.

Plus, I really don't know Johan at all.

I watched Monster, and at one point [spoiler] I was shocked with what Johan does to children. I mean he sends a child down the red district and suddenly the child watches a guy, who introduces himself as a teacher. This 'teacher' butt fucks a woman in front of the child.[/spoiler]

I mean the joker is crazy, but johan is a guy who recruits crazy people and knows how they think. So I think johan would easily win.

I think Johan would win, if it was something that involved a long term plan, but Joker would win in a direct confrontation. With the Joker, it really could only be a direct confrontation, so I'd have to give it to The Joker.

After finishing Monster, I vehemently reenforce my Joker vote. Complicated murder scheme for the sake of a complicated murder scheme does not work for me. At least Joker always knows what he wants. I don't think even Urasawa knew what Johan was after at a certain point. :P

Definitely the Joker on this one.

Though it would be close, I have to give it to Johan; even as a child, this genius was already utilizing Machiavellian Philosophy to manipulate The Communist Elite and later did the same to various high-profile German bankers and eventually a large Neo-Nazi organization. Remember, he framed a brilliant Neurosurgeon (this is how he thanked Dr. Tenma for taking a bullet out of his brain) at the age of 11! He later broadened his reign to The Chek Republic; what The Joker took till his forties to do and could only do in one city, Johan did in two countries by the time he was 20! He did all this without allowing his true identity to be revealed. Yuusuke, watch it again; Johan was deliberate and deceptive however he wasn't sure what memories where real - which contributed to his insanity.

To clarify: I'm not trying to make it sound like I didn't like The Dark Night - quite the contrary, it's one of the greatest films ever made which is why I saw it in theaters, bought the DVD and watched it repeatedly! However, it should be pointed out that Bat Man had billions of dollars and gadgets that his father left him as well as members of the local and county government backing him. Dr. Tenma was accused of being a serial murderer and was associated with those suspected of the same thing (remember The Magnificent Steiner?) so his accounts where frozen and he didn't have Luscious Fox developing next-gen gadgets! As for Tenma being bad with a gun, that's false. He was the perfect technical student however he initially had trouble bringing himself to fire when faced with an actual person - this, however, disappeared.

It also deserves to be stated that Johan could have killed Tenma - or had him killed - at various points however he was toying with him; Johan wanted Tenma to kill him so he left him alive and in the meantime, he played a complex game of cat-and-mouse with numerous people and organizations, with widely varying ideologies. Besides, the cops that didn't work for him (in one capacity or another) couldn’t do anything because no one (apparently, not even “Johan”) even knew who he really was - not to mention that he was perceived as an upstanding member of his community so he wasn't even a suspect.

The real debate is whether Inspector Lunge of the BKA (Runge in the original Manga and Japanese version however that was for the sake of allowing the Japanese to pronounce it - BKA is the German Federal Criminal Police Office) or “Wolfgang Grimmer” (real name unknown - he was also in 511 Kinderhiem) a.k.a. The Magnificent Steiner (the fearless and wrathful alter-ego) would have won, had their paths crossed in a violent manner. In a western duel, I’m not sure how Grimmer would do but Lunge’s definitely no slouch (with any firearm). In a bare knuckle brawl, Steiner - no contest! What makes it an interesting debate is that even if Grimmer isn’t as skilled with firearms, he’s highly skilled at disarming his adversary and brutally beating them to a bloody pulp!

If you remember the events of the first episode (Herr Dr. Tenma), you'll see that in a twisted way, Johan did do tenma a favor - it just came with a few strings attached.

The Joker is also a genius and manipulative however he only has fear to go on; Johan has fear and love. As Machiavelli said "Since it is difficult to join them together, it is safer to be feared than to be loved when one of the two must be lacking."; in the case of The Nameless Monster, he had both however it was fear that he inspired in those that saw him in action.
