Tuesday Otaku Debate: Miyazaki battle royal
by Tim Sheehy, 09/23/2009
Tuesday Otaku Debate: Miyazaki battle royal photo

Well, isn't this a surprise. It's been awhile since we've had something this close. So close, in fact, that we almost had a stalemate. Gloomy Bear and Hello Kitty both proved to be equally popular with each receiving 20 votes. I almost freaked out, thinking we had a tie, until I realized that I had voted in my original post. After adding in my own vote for Gloomy Bear to the totals, it broke the tie leaving him victorious. I guess I can't help it if I see animals, namely bears, for what they are. Souless, godless, rampaging killing machines

Gloomy Bear - 21 votes

Hello Kitty - 20 votes

See the next epic debate after the jump.

About this time last year, we had ourselves the "Battle of the Miyazaki blockbusters" debate where we pit two of Hayao Miyazaki's classics, namely Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle up against each other to see which was more loved. To be honest, the site has grown so immensely since then that I felt we really need to revisit that. Of course, it'd be boring to do the same exact debate, and seeing as the site grew, why shouldn't the size of this debate grow with it? With that in mind, let's hear which of Miyazaki's films was your favorite and why.

I'll start, I absolutely loved Kiki's Delivery Service. I think that maybe the humor and the fact that the movie wasn't at all preachy really struck a chord with me. In contrast, I found myself wondering when Princess Mononoke would just end while I was watching it. It was good, but a bit long winded, and a bit too preachy for my tastes. How about you guys?
