This is a very tough one... I really like Claire, but I just finished up the Fate Stay Night anime... OMG... they both rock... My vote goes to Saber... She really kicks @$$...

Saber is my official waifu and one of my favorite characters so my vote goes instantly to her. Here is reasons I would have gone for if I wasn't already biased:

I don't see how Clare could win in a fight against Saber. Saber defeated both Gilgamesh and Heracles. She was superior in term of skills to all other heroic spirits, the only reason some gave them trouble was because of her incompetent master.

Claire could only fight properly when the spirit of Theresa kicks in and when she got the arm of Irene. Still, I liked Claire and I might have voted for her if she wasn't up against the King of Knights.

Wow, looking at the one sided votes, Fate series is obviously more popular...Since we're ignoring the anime for Claymore(which is pretty good except how they tried to give it a sucky ending), the current manga Clare would kick Saber's @$$ anytime~*dodges bricks* The fact that she's half yokai and can get pretty ugly(literally and figuratively) when she fights probably turned some people off...but I think that just adds to the awesomeness of Claymore and Norihiro Yagi. Clare gets my vote for this one!

Ok heres the deal in a fight when saber was a normal human clare has her number period. Now if its during the holy grail war ( as i asume it is) clare dosent stand a chance as saber with her class abilities from the grail AND the sheath "Avalon" alongside excalibur clares fucked. As clare has no magic resitance shed be desentigrated by the magic of excalibur.

@Fujii: They're one sided for a reason. Not because of it's popularity, gosh no. Claymore was licensed by Viz and the manga's been over here a heck of a lot longer than even Fate's anime, and the only past advantage for Fate would be the VN, but the number of people who've played that that are voting here you could probably count on one hand.

Saber dominates because Excalibur is basically a friggin heavy beam cannon that has in the past completely obliterated targets that were sometimes even a mile away. Combine that with her firestorm defense wall that is Avalon, and all of a sudden the balance is incredibly lopsided, even with factoring in Clare's awakened mode.

@Heero: Basically, without Excalibur and Avalon she's got nothing againts Clare who doesn't rely on anything but her own strength. Even if the Excalibur beam cannon does decimate anything in its path, Clare has godlike speed(spring legs!) and it'll be a piece of cake for her to avoid such an attack. The Claymore sword is just an accessory for her since Clare's REAL weapon is her own body. A definite win over Saber if you ask me. ^^

@Fujii: Have you even seen Fate/Stay Night? Saber isn't exactly slow herself. Just about every one of her attacks does area of effect damage, so she doesn't have to get a direct hit to do damage like Clare does.

Your argument of taking away Excalibur and Avalon from her is about as dumb as the Evangelion versus Tengen Toppa battle we had a while back. Nerfing one contestant down so far so the other one has a chance is redundant because it basically shows that one is clearly more powerful than the other (I'm not saying that's the case here, I'm just saying that it's pointless to argue "if so and so didn't have such and such they'd lose", because even a Gundam will lose to Keiichi Maebara if it doesn't have a power cell).

Even supposing Clare is faster than Saber, let me remind you of what happened to the "quite fast" Rider when she was using Belerophon...

FS/N is one of the most boring animes I ever watched, but Saber has nothing to do with that, I blame mostly that stupid guy who summoned her. Man, he was a wussy! The next Otaku Debate could be "Who is the girliest guy in anime, he or Shinji?".

Raki is a wussy too, but he appears far less than that guy from FS/N. And Claymore is way better, even with the dumb anime end.

Saber just because she had character development that clearly showed in the game and the anime. Claire just gives off the feel of confusion, mostly because after putting up with blood+ I grew tired of the whole part-human-part-monster plot. There's just so many of those plots out there and I'd rather have a character that breaks those trope molds than the one that sticks with it x adding more of the same character.

Well lets see...if Saber could land a solid hit with her partical beam cannon(AC joke) Excalibur then there'd be nothing left for her to fight. But if not, Clare will rip her to shreds.

Well from first look I would say Clare would win, what with her being able to sense Yoma, her brute strength she has when fighting and her speed. (Thanks to Teresa and then later on Irene with her Quick Sword.)

But Saber is more tactical when fighting since, her master is a wimp and doesn't giver her enough Mana when she battles, the fact that she can use long range attacks compared to Clare's close combat and also she has speed.

So I cast my vote to Saber.

@Heero Couldn't get past the first 2 episodes so you'll have to pardon my lack of knowledge on Saber's abilities. My arguments would be based on what I read through fics and everyone's comments here. However, what I brought up earlier IS a point of contention because for me at least, someone who is able to utilize parts of their body as a weapon has a definite advantage over someone who relies mostly on external weaponry. Whether they'll win or lose is another story. In a fight where both of them is at full potential, for sure it won't last long. I'm partial to Tatsuya_Shioshi's point of view...heh.
(For a gundam, their power cells ARE a part of their blueprint not to mention it's the person piloting it that matters more...so imho, it can't be use as a comparison.)

Other than the whole "who will win in a fight?" angle which seems to be the focus here, some other stuff that makes Clare awesome for me:
- She has a personal cook following her around despite not needing to eat most of the time...Okay, so it's obviously Clare's excuse for a rare act of kindness, but for a story about cold blooded monsters, it does make you feel warm and fuzzy more often than you can imagine.
- While the usual female characters typically pander to what the masses expect, Clare is a one of a kind heroine. She's not even remotely moe or cute. Most of the time, it's the opposite. Probably why there less fanboys clamoring over her...But it's refreshing (and heartening) to see such a flawed heroine working her way up through all the crap thrown her way.

I vote Clare because I like her awakened form. Also because she has enough chutzpah to reattach her own severed limbs. Another reason is because she's initially ranked as the weakest claymore and still manages to claw her way to survival, in spite of tangling with enemies magnitudes more powerful than her. I like her BECAUSE she isn't invincible (or possessing of a wave-motion beam).

Avalon makes this kind of unfair.

Clare wins on the grounds that she gets most of her body parts cut off then she reattaches them and keeps fighting... so awesome.
