Tuesday Otaku Debate: SDF Macross vs Star Destroyer
by Jon Snyder, 03/02/2010
Tuesday Otaku Debate: SDF Macross vs Star Destroyer photo

Last week's debate results are in, and it looks like poor Bobby got the shaft. Yup, Leeron dominated the polls with an overwhelming 64% majority, easily trumping Bobby's 24%. Bon Clay was a popular write-in candidate, coming in at 6%. Hanagata, Ivanov and Jon Snyder (!) tied for fourth place, each garnering one vote. These results are also available as a horribly pixellated pie chart in the gallery below.

This week's debate is one for the all the hardcore nerds and starship fanatics out there: an all-out space battle between the Super Dimension Fortress Macross and a mighty Imperial Star Destroyer. It doesn't matter how or why these two ships met... just that they're looking to blow the sh*t out of each other. Which will emerge triumphant? That's up to you to decide!

However, there is a catch. When you vote for your preferred starship, you have to tell me WHY you think it would win. You can write anything from a few sentences to a few paragraphs, as long as you provide a reason for your ship's superiority. Also, I won't be counting write-in candidates this time. Sure, we all know that the Battle Frontier could take out any Imperial ship, and a Borg Cube could defeat the entire U.N. Spacy single-handedly... but let's keep it simple and stick to these two ships for the time being.

Keep reading past the break for more details.

Here's a quick look at each ship's capabilities.

SDF-1 Macross: Clocking in at 1210 meters long, the Macross packs a powerful punch with its super-dimensional energy cannon. In order to fire this weapon, the ship must transform into a giant humanoid mech, which allows it to engage in melee combat but severely limits its speed and maneuverability. Standard armaments include 8 beam cannons, 4 rail cannons and a large number of missile launchers. The only defensive system is the pinpoint barrier, which consists of three small energy discs that can be manually moved to protect key areas of the ship. The Macross has a large compliment of embarked craft, including over 300 VF-1 Super Valkyrie transformable fighters and 587 Destroids.

Imperial II-class Star Destroyer: A standard Star Destroyer is 1600 meters long. While it does not have a powerful main cannon like the Macross, it does sport 36 turbolaser batteries, 8 octuple barbette turbolaser cannons and 20 heavy ion cannons; enough firepower to reduce the surface of a planet to slag in a matter of hours. Defensively, a Star Destroyer features a powerful omnidirectional deflector shield which contours to the ship's hull. However, the shield generators are known to be vulnerable to concentrated fire, especially from starfighters. This ship doesn't have as many embarked craft as the Macross; only 72 TIE fighters and bombers, 5 assault gunboats, and a few armed shuttlecraft for boarding actions.
