Update on Yaoi titles being pulled from Amazon

Update on Yaoi titles being pulled from Amazon photo

Last week, Josh updated us that a bunch of yaoi titles were being pulled from Kindle for reasons unexplained. I was upset to know this, because as has been stated in the linked post's comments, there are more explicit things that are still being sold than comic/cartoon boys enjoying each other. Upon reading some updates from The Yaoi Review's Jennifer LeBlanc, I found that some of the titles are also (maybe) being pulled physically as well as digitally from Amazon's market. You can correct me if I've misconstrued this last point, though.

The above link to TYR contains a list of titles that have been pulled, including Yaoi Press, DMP and some Kindle-exclusive manga. I am surprised at some of this, and I was appalled when I read below it the case of an author whose book is classified/written as a historical title, yet keeps getting bumped into the erotica section of the store due to a rape scene of a child it contains. So, who knows what is really going on in there.

Back to the yaoi issue, it seems some publishers are altering their work enough for it to get back up (no pun intended), but it's not like everyone can just re-draw their manga and make it less..I dunno, sexy? The characters in the books are old enough, and they've all got a 16+ or 18+ rating, so what gives? I'm not too sure why, as was also mentioned in the comments section on the previous post, the gay comics are being picked on.

The whole thing is really disappointing, cause I own a Kindle and use it often when I travel since it's so convenient (compared with lugging around 6 books). I haven't purchased any manga on it but I still feel rather upset just by principle. What are your thoughts on this, whether you like/read yaoi or not?

I don't think it's really the explicit content (since there are much worse offenders of that on Amazon), but just a case of homophobia.
I can't say yaoi is my favorite genre but I did like reading some of them, and pulling releases for reasons unknown like they are doing is making me think twice about buying a Kindle.
Because some people are stupid when they see "objectable content". Instead of taking it on a case by case basis. I don't read yaoi, but everyone has their tastes.
That's terrible news, Darn you Amazon! GRrrrrrrrrrrrr*. This decision definitely would affect my attitude towards purchasing my kindle now.
It could be homophobia or not of course it could be the issue of the word "Boy Love" that scare people into believing its Child Pornography so they ban it anyways .I don't even know why people would spend $100 to $300 on a digital book reader can just buy the book.
Frankly, there are gayer books on Amazon and the Kindle. Just read absolutely anything by Bret Easton Ellis.
I get that Kindle is a niche platform serving mostly niche titles, but why are they so overwhelmingly gay titles? Can't we get something that isn't underaged shotas bangin'? That's why I'm not busted up at all over this - I wasn't getting anything out of their manga selection to begin with.
This kind of censorship drives me mental, it would be nice to be able to decide for myself what I choose not to read/watch/play - almost as bad as apple!!!!
@Bil Doors: The Kindle is not a "niche platform serving mostly niche titles", it's the most popular e-reader in America and it hosts a large amount of mainstream products. And the pulled titles mentioned don't feature "underaged shota bangin' ". It's because people are ignorant and homophobic when it comes to BL/yaoi.
@rinsmith: I love how "homophobia" is always trotted out when somebody says something that somebody else disagrees with. Obviously I was being tongue-in-cheek when I said "underage shota bangin'" and anybody who says that *that* isn't heavily represented in the genre at large is lying to themselves. Kindle is a niche platform - its the biggest e-reader, no doubt, and I love it. But its not replacing the paper-back anytime soon. Yaoi is a niche sub-genre within a niche genre. Its no surprise to me that the support is being pulled on the platform, I'm just surprised it ever had the presence that it did.
I'm not asking for Shonen Jump titles here. I wish I could get Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, or some more stuff from Yoshitoshi Abe. For that matter, why aren't we getting more light novels? I'd be happy just to get the first Zaregoto on the device at this point.
While I agree/hope that the digital format won't replace out physical, I don't feel that there's a point in the first place if they're going to be so selective or biased. I agree with a point made in the comments on the post I referenced that it's not like most users are going to be little kids; gotta use a CC to purchase your material meaning a consenting adult purchased whatever is downloaded.
@Kristina: Yeah, you're right about that. Good points. Its not so much that I'm dancing for joy over here that they're removing material, so much as I'm numb to any feelings of sympathy or disappointment because the selection has *always* been disappointing to me. Here's hoping that the publishers make more adventurous choices as regards the Kindle platform in the future.
This is certainly worrying. What these authors need to do is to find another platform that doesn't censor their content. Perhaps an Open Source distributor like UbuntuOne.

They came for my neighbours' yaoi, and I did nothing; then they came for my loli Gunslinger Girl collection of manga.
@bill doors
Erotica titles have been flourishing on e-readers mostly because of the anonymity of the purchase. For straight guys, there isn't as much stigma associated with buying and keeping porn and such around. You can't argue that society isn't as accepting of this behavior in young women. Evidence: The success of Yaoi titles in Amazon's online stores and e-readers compared to its representation on store shelves. It's the same reason me and most of my friends buy our "family planning" items through catalogs/consultants instead of at the local drugstore.
This is right .and it is provides in the people.

@Apriled: I agree, a lot of society still thinks women are pure ladies and if they're interested in sex they must be whores or nymphos (sad thing is I'm not kidding) So I can see why my fellow women would purchase a kindle. Personally I don't see why you should get your erotica that way, there's tons of it online for free :D

@bill doors: *Implying anything underage is shota :D* I see your point that when people think of the word "underage" they immediately think of little boys, when underage can be a very developed 17 year old, for example (and it goes up to 21 if we think about tobacco and alcohol restrictions). I'm not sure if you're a seasoned BL fan, but I agree that most of the selection in English is disappointing; a bunch of titles are crappy comics period; pacing, story, characters hell even art sometimes. That's why I stick to the big guns like Yamane Ayano.
@Yaku Speaking of Yamane Ayano, I don't see Finder series in the book stores any more. I am so disappointed.
@Bill Doors: Sorry I missed your sarcasm, but your response sounded a lot like those "eww, gays" posts I see so often in the comments section of these kinds of articles. True, the Kindle hasn't replaced regular books but it growing more popular everyday. And you can buy popular books to put on it, not just niche titles. As for the "underage" thing, yes it can refer to teenagers but shota usually refers to little boys.
