Video reveals that every anime uses the same OP

Video reveals that every anime uses the same OP photo

We're on to you now, anime studios! This mash-up video is overwhelming proof that every anime opening uses the same stock footage.

The video's creator, Derek Lieu, said he was amused by the repeat imagery he saw and wanted to make a video to prove the point. Though the video has gotten a mostly positive response, he wrote on Twitter that anime fans were angry about the video and thought he made it to make anime look bad. But, "who would put that much effort into something they hate?"

Watch the video after the jump and be sure to click through to YouTube to view the full list of anime titles used -- all 93 of them!

Can you recognize them all?

Lol, I never actually noticed that.. The birds are pretty obvious, but the rest of the video is funny.
This can prove many anime company conspiracy theories!
Wow, watching that video was like seeing the last 6 years of my life flash right before my eyes
A friend of mine found that many anime openings follow the same beats and showed me a mashup to prove it. This is why no one ever watches openings and endings.
Saw this on Sankaku Complex a few days ago. It's really odd to see all the imagery that seems to be in all anime OPs.
@ The-Excel
Exactly, as a musician that can pick out what songs another song is stealing from very quickly most of the time this stuff drives me up the wall so when ever someone does ANYTHING new it's like WOW... but it is rare.. I can usually tell with'in the first few seconds if it is the same old canned tripe and skip... or if I want to watch the animation... mute.
My favorite bit was the gazing out of the window. Hilarious.
Imagery = Culture. You can guess a lot about the kind of message coming from the common imagery: friendship, hope, beauty, adventure. And that pretty much what I'm getting out of anime.
i laughed when it showed xmen footage
Initially, I simply thought "well no kidding, I've seen all this stuff before" but then the rapid montage of the heads turning toward the viewer and the sparkly tears had me in stiches.

I can't see how anyone could get mad at this video. It's hilarious because it's true, and honestly, stock footage in anime OPS is really the least of my worries when it comes to anime. Hell, I bet if you did the same thing with movies or TV shows, you'd find the same thing. Certain imagery are just really good at conveying a specific message.
I will acknowledge the fact that many of these openings share similar symbols, but I believe that the openings are mostly similar to each other not simply because they're anime, but because anime tends to emphasize human qualities.

For example, anime will mimic human movement and frankly, humans don't have a lot of variety of movement in everyday life. We've basically got one set of motion - for example, we can only either run or walk to travel, we don't go skipping or walking on our hands on a regular basis. When we're not operating a vehicle, we turn our heads to see things/things that catch our attention.

As for the counter-balance (two characters, opposite sides), that's more reflective of Japanese culture and Asian culture more broadly. I think that it's only natural anime openings reflect this part since such visualizations are typically difficult to do in live-action. However, manga imagery typically uses such a scene, so long as it's been out long enough (it's not limited to anime).

The use of birds symbolizing freedom however, is one that is abundantly common, but I don't believe that it can ever be over-used because it is such a vital part of he human psyche. Personally, the angel-motif in Gundam has irritated me a lot in recent years, but that's more specific to Gundam than anything else, because those Gundam series are cut from the same tree.

I also don't believe that different is always better. Why is it insinuated that anime openings must be completely different from each other? Isn't it enough that the story that the anime portrays is different from each other? Why would it reflect poorer production quality if it borrowed from ideas from previous works? Books do this in earnest all the time!

In summation, I believe that anime openings are only the same for two reasons: the first is that it is trying to appeal in symbols relevant to people, and if taken out of context, can be grouped into a more generic pool (which takes away the differentiating qualities like sequence, or direction).
Furthermore, it's not as if every series shares all of the prescribed themes, sometimes, it's only one or two of those images, of perhaps 20-40 sequences.

Still. I do like this video a video montage. I can't diss stuff that I like in the end.
OBJECTION!

One of those was from the American X-Men cartoon from the 90s.

I find it funny that I can’t think of an opening that doesn’t have someone staring into the distance dramatically while the wind blows their hair.

I noticed this a while ago but I never said anything because I’m still fairly new to anime and figured it was something everybody already knew about and just accepted, like all those shows with similar characters or the plot premises we’ve all heard a hundred times.
I dunno is it sad that I recognize almost 90% of these shows? Probably. It's still pretty cool.
Ouch. Quite a blow to the industy...
Praise to all of them who did that FIRST! :)
It's just the openings you guys. Who really gives a shit.

Not to say this isn't impressive and this guy is cool for doing this but come on, "a blow to the industry"? People getting mad at the video? OPs are just ways to show off the characters Jesus Christ.
@Niomo
OBJECTION!

The X-Men OP in Japan was redone, to technically the OP shown is anime!
And should be done away with anyway... I see it as a way to eat time so they don't have to do as much... Like when they do a intro, a recap and a OP... come on that's just mean and lazy.
@Handy: The House of Five Leafs (Sarai-ya Goyou) doesn't have one of this tropes in teh opnening. Neither do Bacanno!! or Durarara have the hair, that I recall...

Fun video, but exagerated. And as said before the iamgery is aprt of the culture, so to convey a certain feel it is usual to use a known symbol. That is the whole point of having a symbol for something. it is not bad, nor good, it is how it works. In anime and every place else.
I really liked the video. I hadn't really noticed a lot of the things before, so it was kind of funny to watch. Mostly, though, it just made me want to go back and re-watch some of those shows that I haven't seen in ages.
Pretty awesome. I don't think it comes from a place of anime hate. If anything, it's the kind of thing that makes me go "Man, I love anime". It's funny, but it feels more like an inside joke than poking fun.

Someone once mentioned (in some anime forum) that a lot of anime openings have seagulls, which is true. But I guess it makes sense since Japan is an island?
What fission said.
I enjoyed the video and don't see it as a way to make fun of the industry. I thought it was obvious that certain scenes and imagery were repeated in most OPs. This doesn't bother me any because I still enjoy watching most OPs.
Hahaha. I liked this a lot.
Um, duh!
Kuro, both Baccano and Durarara rip off Snatch to a T.
Now I'm waiting patiently to see if there's a video made showing that every anime uses the same ED.
Ouch, this video got featured on io9 and the io9 community is using the video as justification for tearing anime apart as redundant and stupid. Kinda sucks when two of my favorite hobbies (anime and science fiction) get into a flame war.
Opening, a good vibe for you to start watching your beloved show. Think about the teledrama side, ouch! thats heck much worse if you'll gonna consider that as well.....even those comedy shows.

if we will gonna think about the quantity of anime that we have been watching since kids, its quite impo even for Einstein to come up with a very original scene for all those 1000+ openings (which is pretty much made up of introducing characters or a new arc).....

conclusion, kinda pointless video if you ask me.
This is gold. I don't particularly mind the overuse of many of these though, because they're still pretty striking if done correctly. That said, the head turning montage had me chuckling.
lmao! very,very,very true.
Hey, what works works. :P
Dang! This guy beat me to it! I have literally for the past two months been working on a mini-video project saying the same thing!
@Gee-man, that sucks! Can't we parody the things we love anymore without people assuming we're criticizing them?
ROFL. I am a huge anime fan and I have noticed some similiarities here and there on all of them which is why unless I really like the song that goes with it I don't often watch the opening or closing more than once in a greta while.

That being said its interesting that they may use a lot of the same "tricks" when doing their openings but for all of them each character is often doing the same thing but provoking different feelings. For one character running could be from danger whereas another it is to reach someone that they have lost. Sometimes a persons look seem's distant the first time we see it but after watching the show you find it rather thoughtful.

Look at it this way. There are only so many different types of movies or fiction novels that are released. One could say that each one in a given genre is just like every other one but as any fan of those genres would tell you the devil is in the details. I have at least a dozen or so "harem" style animes and many would argue that they are all the same yet I still enjoy watching each for their story and quirky characters.
I saw this video a few days ago. It was highly amusing. I noticed that they did have similar elements, but I always enjoy looking at the different ways they're rendered with specific characters/environments. If I really like an anime opening/ending I'll still watch through it every time.
It is pretty amusing, and I'm actually pretty impressed by the amount of effort put into the video. But while I love my anime OPs I don't see any reason to be offended or take this hard evidence that anime creators are completely lacking in creativity or whatever. It's just a series of tropes, and that's not a bad thing to me. Tropes happen in every genre.

And at least, overused imagery or not, anime OPs are still generally pretty to look at.

Also you can all probably tell which site I've been spending too much time at.
The head turning montage is what finally killed me. LOL

Luckily there are still some unique OPs out there, even if these tropes do work well enough.
@The_Kenji I feel ya man, I have heard of 95% of the stuff in that video and seen around 86 to 90% of the stuff on it. In a way it can be sad or pretty damn awesome.

Very amusing and on the other note how can one get mad at the truth. I notice that he forgot the two character have a fight and then clash as we zoom in to their clash sequence along with some others but over all very amusing.
Woops ,nevermind one it showed one of the clashing sequences.
i enjoyed this. The same could be done for a number of television intros. I saw a couple things missing though. They didn't have the main character free falling through the sky, The villian in front of his minions, or the show title showing up.
Well, this is like saying "Tv series use tropes!". Then again, it's hilarious comparing the glittering tears and bird feathers flying around.
Nice vid, and yes, honestly, you start to notice the similarities after a while. There's always a strong wind, maybe some random birds, and I still don't know why the hell everyone's always running.
...I wasn't aware this wasn't obvious.
"who would put that much effort into something they hate?"
@Dblitzer/myself gah cut off my comment for some odd reason (site needs a delete button or something) anyway really, quite a lot of people would put that much effort into something they have disdain for, perhaps a bit off topic from the video, but i find that to be a flimsy defense
Clearly all anime should open like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sarYH0z948

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Well, yeah.
Every anime has to have:
Running
Birds
Walking
Looking at something faraway
Turning
Crying
...Flying?
QUICK TRANSITIONS
Twili- ...Close ups of faces
Group shot
Half dead main character then a perfectly fine love interest/other character - "TAKE MAH HAND" scenario

Nobody noticed?
