Viewers get to choose the Yamato Rebirth's ending

Viewers get to choose the Yamato Rebirth's ending photo

Having been too young to watch much anime during that period, I missed out on much of the huge space opera greatness that Space Battleship Yamato was part of. Needless to say I was pretty stoked when they announced that the venerable property would be getting a new film on December 12th.

Now I've got either reason to be more stoked, or to be awash in depression, because viewers will get to choose the film's ending.

After a private screening on November 28th, audiences will be shown 15 minutes of extra footage depicting a different ending to the film. The viewers will then be given a chance to vote using their cellphones to determine which ending will be used in the final, December 12th general release.

The endings are called "The Yamato fights against its fate," and "The Yamato accepts its fate." Apparently the idea had been floating around since the movie's planning stages, so at least we can be sure it won't feel "tacked on."

Then again, why would anyone just sit down and accept their fate! That can't possibly be as epic as fighting fate...unless accepting one's fate means to fight fate...now my head hurts.
