Viz licenses live-action Detroit Metal City film photo

It blows my mind that the man in the header image up there, Kenichi Matsuyama, is the same man who played the creepy, low-key character "L" in the Death Note live-action films. But here he is, playing the lead role in another live-action adaptation of a manga. And now US residents can see him again, as Viz has licensed the Detroit Metal City film for release later this year.

For those unfamiliar with the premise, Matsuyama plays Soichi Negishi, an innocent young man who ends up becoming the lead singer for a death metal band. On stage, he transforms into his alter-ego Johannes Krauser II and becomes one of the most evil singers the world has ever known. He must balance his unwanted band's rising stardom while taking on challenges like a duel with the legendary king of death metal Jack ill Dark (played by KISS frontman Gene Simmons!) and trying to hide his secret identity from his girlfriend who despises death metal.

It's certainly an over-the-top film, and it seems to capture the energy of the prior anime adaptation pretty well. As someone who loves band films like This Is Spinal Tap, I'm interested in seeing it. Hopefully Viz can get some sort of limited theatrical release, because I'd love to go see this with friends. Check out the trailer after the break!

Legacy Comments

Oh man, I forgot that this was being made. Loved the anime, looking forward to watching this :D
I love the anime, but as someone who saw the movie after the anime, it might be better going into this movie with a different mindset, than what you would expect coming out of an anime. Most of my friends who I had watch this, enjoyed it a lot more, prior to seeing the anime. Hopefully they'll have Gene Simmons extras in the DVD/Blu-Ray! :D
I love the manga, anime, and the live action film. I'll happily buy this on blu-ray when it hits the states.
Everything having to do with DMC, this movie included, is simply fantastic. Don't pass up on it.
GO TO DMC! GO TO DMC! GO TO DMC!

Day one because I will be going to DMC.
I got a VCD release of this film a while back and really enjoyed it. It's completely crazy, but very fun. Yasuko Matsuyuki does a brilliant job as the Death Records President. :-P

GO TO DMC! GO TO DMC!
looks funny! definitely I'll see.
I imported the HK BD a couple months ago. As wacky and as crazy as you'd expect, if you liked the anime. Recommended! :D
Aaahhh hell, now I HAVE to buy this!
That movie is a Hoot!!!!

Go To DMC!
Go To DMC!
DO WANT!

GO TO DMC
GO TO DMC
AWESOME
R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-RAPE!

Only in Japan can you have a Battle of the Bands featuring a song with just that one word. Enjoyed the anime and enjoyed the live action movie. Never read the manga since I'm not a manga reader.
I saw this movie quite a while ago. While I wasn't too familiar with the manga or the anime at the time, I really liked the movie. It was really funny. My brother, who had read the manga and watched the anime, liked it, but he said they left a lot out. I'm planning on watching the anime, but I have so many other series to catch up on. I might make this next on my "to watch" list.
